Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of ShadowsThree weeks later, the autumn sun broke through the gray clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the tranquil lawns of St. Jude’s Hospital.

Claire sat in a rocking chair by the sunroom window, cradling her newborn son—whom she had officially named Leo—against her shoulder. The baby was sleeping peacefully, his tiny chest rising and falling in steady, rhythmic harmony with her own.
The legal battles ahead were destined to be seismic. With Julian Sterling legally declared dead and the impostor—whose true identity was unmasked as a high-stakes financial fugitive named Victor Vance—facing multiple federal counts of arson, kidnapping, identity theft, and corporate conspiracy, the Sterling estate was locked in an unprecedented probate freefall.
Because Julian Sterling’s biological heir—little Leo—carried verified genetic markers from the Sterling cryotank vault, probate courts were already swarming with corporate attorneys trying to claim rights to the multi-billion-dollar empire.
But Claire wasn't afraid.
The door to the private hospital room opened softly. Detective Miller Vance stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder and a steaming cup of coffee for her.
"How are our two favorite survivors doing today?" Vance asked quietly, pulling up a chair.
"We're doing wonderfully, Miller," Claire smiled, shifting Leo slightly so he wouldn't wake. "No more nightmares. No more sirens. Just... quiet."
Vance placed the manila folder on the side table. "I thought you'd want to see this before it hits the morning papers. The federal prosecutor’s office finished processing the contents of Sophie’s flash drive. Combined with Vanessa’s full confession, the corporate board of Sterling Enterprises has officially voted to forfeit all contested trust funds into a secured, independent endowment for Leo’s upbringing."
Claire looked at the folder, then back at Vance. "They're giving it up without a fight?"
"They don't have a choice," Vance chuckled dryly. "The evidence of systemic fraud, illegal human experimentation funding, and forced identity replacement is so toxic that the board would rather hand over the keys to the kingdom than face a public RICO trial. Furthermore... the courts have officially recognized you, Claire Morgan, as the sole, unencumbered legal guardian and biological mother by birthright and adoption precedent. No corporate board can touch you."
Claire let out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for six agonizing months. She looked down at Leo, who stirred in his sleep, letting out a soft, contented sigh.
"And Sophie?" Claire asked softly.

"She's doing great," Vance smiled warmly. "Child services placed her with a wonderful foster family in a quiet suburb two towns over. But she visits every weekend. In fact, she’s downstairs right now with a giant pink teddy bear that's twice her size."
Claire laughed—a genuine, beautiful sound that chased the last lingering shadows from the room.
