Chapter 14 - THE GENERAL'S ADVANTAGE

Victor’s men began to pivot their weapons toward Maren, but they had made one fatal calculation: they forgot about the dog.
General didn't growl. He didn't bark. He launched himself from the shadows like a greyhound released from a trap, slamming directly into the chest of the lead tactical guard. The man went down with a sickening crack of bone against concrete, his weapon clattering across the floor.
Chaos erupted in the cramped archive room.
Dominic moved with terrifying speed for a man with a healed bullet wound, lunging forward to grab the barrel of the second guard's rifle and driving his knee upward into the man's groin.
Maren didn't flinch. She grabbed Victor’s silk scarf, twisted it sharply until the older man choked for air, and swept his legs out from under him with a textbook judo trip. Victor hit the floor hard, his silver cane clattering away across the tiles.
In less than six seconds, the fight was over. Three of Victor's guards groaned on the floor, nursing broken bones, while the fourth backed slowly into the dark stairwell and fled into the night.
Victor lay on his back, gasping for breath, staring up at Maren as she stood over him, the pistol pointed squarely between his eyes.

"You... you're Thomas's girl," Victor choked out, recognizing the amber eyes that haunted his family's dark history.
"And you're next on the list, Uncle," Maren said quietly.
