Chapter 9 - EMPIRES IN THE LIGHT

Six months later, the old box factory off Marlow Street was gone, replaced by a sprawling public logistics park funded by a mysterious, anonymous philanthropic trust known only as the Vance-Shaw Foundation.

The city's underworld had tried to fill the vacuum left by Ronan’s collapse, but every time a new crew attempted to establish a foothold on the docks, they found themselves facing an invisible wall of federal investigations, seized assets, and anonymous tips that always seemed to arrive right before a shipment moved. The old syndicates learned to look elsewhere. Fear was no longer the currency of the harbor.

On a bright autumn afternoon, a sleek black sedan pulled up outside a quiet, brick-fronted grammar school upturning toward the university district.

Dominic Shaw—wearing a tailored suit that hid the faint, jagged scar along his ribs—stepped out of the passenger side and leaned against the door, waiting. His hair was streaked with silver now, but the heavy, exhausted slouch of a hunted man was completely gone.

The school bell rang, spilling a chaotic wave of shouting, laughing children onto the pavement.

Among them walked a girl with sharp amber-tinted eyes, carrying a heavy backpack stuffed with textbooks instead of tactical gear, her hair tied back neatly. Trotting faithfully at her heels was a massive, scarred dog whose fierce reputation was now entirely matched by how many children stopped to pet him on the sidewalk.

Maren spotted Dominic leaning against the car, rolled her eyes with the universal exasperation of a teenager whose guardian insists on picking them up, and walked over.

"You don't have to wait outside every day, you know," she said, crossing her arms as she stopped in front of him. "I'm not twelve anymore."

"I know," Dominic said, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his weathered face as he opened the car door for her. "Just making sure you haven't added any more names to a list."

Maren reached into her jacket pocket, pulled out a smooth gray river stone, tossed it casually into the air, and caught it with a grin.

"Only if you forget to buy ice cream on the way home, old man."

Dominic laughed, sliding into the driver's seat as General leaped gracefully into the back. The engine purred to life, smooth and steady, and they drove away into the afternoon sun—leaving the dark alleys far, far behind them.
