Chapter 17 - DAWN OVER MARLOW STREET

Three days later, the financial news channels were in absolute chaos. Headlines flashed across every screen from New York to London: Mysterious Liquidation Cripples Global Syndicate; Billions Returned to Public Trusts.

In the penthouse office overlooking the newly revitalized Marlow Street docks, Dominic Shaw stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the morning sun catch the rolling waves of the bay. The copper smell of blood and rain was gone, replaced by the smell of fresh coffee and salt air.

The office door opened, and Maren walked in, carrying a heavy cardboard box filled with old notebooks, ledgers, and a single glass jar now completely filled with smooth gray river stones.

"The federal marshals picked up Victor this morning at the airport," Maren said, setting the box down on the mahogany desk. "He didn't even try to run. He just sat on a bench and stared at his empty hands."

Dominic turned around, walking over to the desk. He reached into the box, picked up one of the smooth gray stones, and turned it over in his calloused palm.

"Thirty-three stones," Dominic said softly. "The list is empty, Maren. Every debt has been paid."

"Not quite," she replied, her amber eyes catching the morning light.

Dominic raised an eyebrow. "What's left?"

Maren reached into her coat pocket and pulled out one final, unpolished, jagged piece of dark basalt—rough, sharp, completely unlike the smooth river stones in the jar.

"This one isn't a debt," Maren said, placing the jagged stone right in the center of the desk. "This one is the future."
