Chapter 10 - THE LAST LINE

Down in the old maintenance tunnels beneath the ferry terminal, where the damp air smelled of ancient iron and forgotten secrets, the glass jar still sat on a wooden shelf in the abandoned shed.

It was completely empty now.

Every stone had been cleared, every debt settled, every ghost laid to rest in the roaring tide of the river outside.

Yet, carved deep into the soft mortar of the brick wall right beside the empty shelf, someone had scratched a final, permanent message into the stone with the tip of a knife—a reminder for anyone who might stumble out of the dark looking for an empire built on fear:

“Empires fall like rain. But a child with a memory outlasts the storm.”

A single drop of water slipped from a leaking pipe overhead, striking the carved letters with a clear, resonant ping, before vanishing quietly into the floor below.
