Chapter 1 - Into the ShadowsThe armored Mercedes vanished into the mist of the Thames estuary, leaving behind a cold, wet silence. Viktor Draven sat in the backseat, his heart hammering against his ribs—a rhythm he hadn’t felt since his early days on the streets of Bucharest. Across from him sat Marcus, his chief of security, whose hand hovered anxiously over the holster of a silenced Glock.

"Sir, this is madness," Marcus muttered, wiping rain-water from his forehead. "A stray dog and a street urchin? The Bratva is laughing at us if they know about this. Or worse, it's a decoy."

"If it’s a decoy, Marcus, we’ll burn every rat in London," Viktor replied, his voice flat, freezing the air inside the vehicle. "Did you see her eyes? Children who have survived the streets don’t play games with men like me."

Shadow trotted ahead, his paws splashing rhythmically through the puddles of the old docklands. The little girl, whose name Viktor finally learned was Lily, kept pace effortlessly, her oversized boots clicking against the cracked asphalt. She didn't look back. She trusted the dog implicitly, and by some twisted thread of fate, Viktor found himself trusting the child.

They reached the rusted iron gates of Pier 42—a condemned shipping yard where rust had eaten through the skeletal frames of massive cranes. Beyond it lay the entrance to the Victorian storm drains, a subterranean maze running beneath the financial district where sunlight never pierced.

Shadow stopped abruptly. He lowered his snout to a heavy iron grate half-concealed by rotting seaweed. A low, warning growl rumbled in the dog's chest.

"Here?" Viktor stepped out of the car, the rain plastering his dark coat to his shoulders. He didn't care about the mud. He cared about his son, Leo.

Lily nodded, her breath pluming in the freezing night air. "The smell of copper and old oil. Shadow tracked it for miles. He says... well, he doesn't speak, but he won't leave this spot."

Marcus pried a crowbar from the trunk. With a metallic screech that echoed across the dead docks, the grate gave way, releasing a wave of stagnant air that smelled of ozone, sewage, and fresh blood.

Viktor pulled a heavy-caliber pistol from his shoulder holster, chambering a round with a sharp, lethal clack. "Stay here with the car, Lily."

The girl looked up at the kingpin of London with fierce, unblinking eyes. "No. My dog goes where I go. And your son is down there."
