Chapter 5 - The Ghost in the MachineOutside the containment cell, in the high-tech surveillance bunker hidden behind the one-way glass, Julian Vance was pouring himself a glass of expensive Scottish whiskey. He watched the grainy infrared monitors with a smug, victorious smile. Three figures lay motionless on the floor inside the gas-filled room.

"Clean and efficient," Julian muttered to his lead technician. "Set the self-destruct charges on the sewer access. I want this entire block leveled by sunrise. No bodies, no evidence."
"Sir!" the technician suddenly gasped, staring wide-eyed at a secondary thermal monitor in the corner of the console. "Sir, look at Sector 4 sub-drain!"
Julian frowned, turning toward the screen. "What am I looking at? A rat?"
"No, sir. It's... it's a thermal signature. Moving fast through the intake pipe behind the control room wall. It bypassed the primary electronic firewall!"
Before Julian could bark an order, the heavy steel-reinforced maintenance panel behind the server racks exploded outward in a shower of sparks and shattered rivets. A streak of mud, matted fur, and pure, concentrated rage hurtled out of the dark pipe.
Shadow didn't bark. He landed on all four paws, his fangs bared, eyes glowing feral in the dim emergency lighting of the bunker.
"Shoot it! Shoot the damn dog!" Julian shrieked, fumbling for his pistol.
Two armed guards raised their submachine guns, but Shadow was too fast. He leaped off a server rack, slamming directly into the throat of the first guard, sending him crashing backward into a rack of hard drives with a sickening crunch. The second guard fired wildly, bullets chipping concrete and shattering monitors, but Shadow darted beneath a desk, launching himself upward like a furry missile and sinking his jaws deep into the guard's gun-arm.
The weapon clattered to the floor. The guard screamed, collapsing under the ferocious assault of the scruffy street dog.
Julian raised his pistol, aiming a trembling barrel straight at Shadow's head. "Vermin," he hissed.

Julian pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. The chamber was empty.
Shadow slowly turned his head, staring at Julian with dark, intelligent eyes that seemed to hold centuries of judgment. Then, the dog tilted his head back and let out a long, haunting howl that echoed through the entire subterranean complex.
