Chapter 8 - Dawn Over the ThamesThe rain finally stopped as the first pale rays of morning broke over the London skyline, slicing through the heavy mist hanging above the River Thames. Sirens wailed in the distance—not police sirens called by enemies, but the automated emergency signals triggered by the bunker's security self-destruct sequence, which Viktor’s loyal cleanup crew had managed to contain just in time.

Outside the abandoned warehouse, a fleet of black SUVs idled quietly. Paramedics were tending to Leo inside one of the vehicles, wrapping his bruised wrists and administering saline IVs. The color was back in his cheeks; he was going to live.

Viktor walked out into the cool morning air, buttoning his wool coat. He turned around, looking for the little girl.

She was standing by the edge of the pier, skipping small stones across the grey surface of the river. Shadow sat faithfully beside her, his scruffy tail thumping against the wooden planks.

Viktor approached slowly, his heavy footsteps muffled by the damp wood. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, platinum-encrusted signet ring—the master crest of the Draven syndicate, a token that commanded absolute obedience and wealth anywhere in the European underworld.

He knelt down beside her. Lily didn't look away from the water.

"You saved my son's life, Lily," Viktor said, his voice unusually soft, stripped of all the ice and authority that terrified grown men. "And you saved me from my own blindness. In my world, debt is never forgotten."

He held out the heavy platinum ring. "Take this. Show it to any man wearing my crest in London, and you will never spend another night on the streets. You will have a home, schools, protection, anything you want."

Lily glanced down at the ring, then looked up into Viktor’s eyes. She didn't smile, but her gaze softened just a fraction.

She shook her head slowly. "I don't need your ring, Mr. Draven."

Viktor blinked, taken aback. "You can have anything. Wealth, power, safety."

"Power is what put my father in the ground, and what almost killed your son," Lily said quietly, standing up and brushing the dirt from her thin coat. She whistled softly, and Shadow stood up, stretching his legs. "We don't need an empire. We just need to keep moving."

Viktor stared at her, humbled in a way no rival crime boss had ever managed to make him. He slowly closed his hand around the ring, stood up, and nodded respectfully.

"At least tell me where you're going," Viktor asked as she turned to walk down the dock.

Lily looked over her shoulder, a faint, cryptic smile playing on her lips. "Wherever the streets take us. Shadow smells rain coming in from the north."
