Chapter 7 - Crossfire

Before Dr. Silva could pull the trigger, Ignacio dove behind a rusted steel cargo container just as a bullet sparked off the metal inches from his head.
Bang! Bang!
Gunshots echoed across the empty docks, shattering the eerie silence of the harbor. Ignacio peeked around the corner of the container, raised his grandfather's rifle, and squeezed the trigger. The heavy-duty shell struck Lucas squarely in the shoulder, spinning him around and sending his pistol clattering across the wet concrete.
"Lucas!" Silva screamed, diving behind a stack of oil drums for cover.
Ignacio didn't waste a second. He sprinted across the open space toward the shipping container where his mother and mother-in-law were bound. He sliced through the heavy zip-ties with a pocketknife, freeing their hands and pulling the gags from their mouths.
"Get to the truck! Go!" Ignacio shouted, pushing his mother toward the dark perimeter of the yards.

Suddenly, a heavy blow struck Ignacio across the back, sending him crashing face-first into the dirt. Dr. Silva loomed over him, pressing the cold barrel of a pistol directly against the back of his neck.
"End of the line, Ignacio," Silva whispered, his breath hot and malicious. "You fought hard, but love doesn't win wars. Power does."
