Chapter 1 - The Sovereign of the Shadow World

The silence in the club didn’t just fall; it suffocated.
The heavy, thumping bass that had been rattling the crystal chandeliers of The Obsidian Room died instantly, cut off at the whim of a single hand gesture from the VIP balcony. The laughter of the women who had mocked Naomi’s sapphire dress evaporated. The clinking of expensive champagne glasses ceased.
Luca Ferraro descended the grand spiral staircase, his movements slow, deliberate, and radiating a terrifying, absolute authority.
He didn’t look like a businessman, though his name was plastered over half the shipping vessels in the Atlantic. He looked like a dark god carved from obsidian and cold marble. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and moved with the silent, lethal grace of an apex predator. He buttoned his bespoke black jacket with fingers that had signed both multi-billion-dollar deals and, rumor had it, death warrants.
Every head in the room bowed slightly as he passed. Except for Anton Volkov.
Anton stood his ground, though his grip on Naomi’s wrist had vanished the moment Luca’s boots hit the marble floor.
Naomi took a shaky step back, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her sapphire dress, which had felt like an armor of confidence in her small apartment, now felt like a target painted on her skin. She clutched her bruised wrist, her skin still burning from Anton’s grip.
Luca stopped exactly three paces away. He didn’t look at Anton. His dark, impenetrable eyes scanned Naomi first. He took in the tears she was fighting to keep back, the fierce defiance still lingering in her jaw, the bright blue of her dress, and finally, the angry red handprint blooming on her pale wrist.
Something shifted in his face. It was subtle—a slight tightening of his jaw, a darkening of his pupils—but the temperature in the room seemed to plummet by ten degrees.
"Anton," Luca said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated through the floorboards. "You are in my house."
Anton forced a smooth, dismissive laugh, though Naomi noticed the slight tremor in his fingers as he adjusted his cuffs. "Just having a friendly conversation with a guest, Luca. No harm intended."
"A friendly conversation," Luca repeated. He stepped closer, completely ignoring Anton now, and stood directly in front of Naomi.
The sheer size of him was overwhelming. He towered over her, his broad shoulders completely blocking out the rest of the hostile room. He smelled of expensive cedarwood, rich tobacco, and rain.
Without a word, Luca reached behind him, unbuttoned his heavy, charcoal-wool tailored coat, and slipped it off his shoulders. Before Naomi could protest, he draped it over her.
The coat was massive, swallowing her curves, wrapping her in his scent and a sudden, fierce warmth. The heavy fabric shielded her from the judgmental glares of the crowd, hiding her exposed shoulders and the sapphire dress they had mocked.
"It is chilly in here," Luca said softly, his voice surprisingly gentle, meant only for her.
"I—I don't need—" she stammered, her voice cracking.
Luca ignored her protest. He reached out, his large, scarred hand incredibly gentle as he took her injured wrist. He turned it over, his thumb lightly brushing against the red mark Anton had left behind.
"Who did this to you?" Luca asked.
"Luca, let's not make a scene over an auditor," Anton sneered from behind him. "She’s a nobody. She has something that belongs to my employers. I am simply retrieving it."
Luca slowly let go of Naomi’s wrist. He turned his head, looking at Anton over his shoulder. The look in his eyes was lethal.
"She is not a nobody," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that echoed in the silent room. "She is mine."
A collective gasp rippled through the onlookers. The silver-clad women who had sneered at Naomi earlier looked as though they had just swallowed glass.
"Yours?" Anton scoffed, though he took a step back. "Since when do you patronize civil servants, Ferraro? The girl is an auditor. She’s dissecting your books as we speak."
"What she does with my books is her business," Luca said, stepping between Anton and Naomi, shielding her completely. "But what you do to her in my establishment is my business. And I do not tolerate vermin laying hands on what belongs to me."
"The Bratva won't be happy about this, Luca," Anton warned, his voice turning ugly. "We have a deal. The forty-eight million—"
"The deal is dead," Luca interrupted coldly. "And if you do not leave my sight in the next three seconds, you will be too."
Anton’s face twisted in rage, but the sudden appearance of four massive, armed security guards behind Luca made him reconsider. With a bitter curse under his breath, Anton turned on his heel and stormed out of the club, his men falling in lockstep behind him.
The tension in the air remained thick. Luca turned back to Naomi.
"Come," he said, offering his arm.
Naomi stared at his arm. She was an auditor. She lived in a world of numbers, logic, and cold, hard facts. And the facts told her that Luca Ferraro was a man who ruled the New York underworld with an iron fist. He was dangerous. He was corrupt.
But he was also the only thing standing between her and a shallow grave.
"Why are you doing this?" she whispered.
Luca’s lips curved into a faint, dangerous shadow of a smile. "Because, Miss Bennett, you and I have a great deal of math to discuss. And I prefer to do my accounting in private."
He didn't wait for her consent. He gently but firmly guided her toward the private elevator, leaving the whispering, stunned crowd of Manhattan's elite behind them.

As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing them in silence, Naomi realized with terrifying clarity: she hadn't been rescued.
She had just been claimed by the beast.
