Chapter 5 - The Shelter in the Storm

The storm had become a full-blown blizzard by the time Naomi dragged Luca through the door of a small, hidden cabin deep in the woods.

Luca collapsed onto a wooden cot, his breathing shallow and ragged. His sweater was soaked in blood, and his skin was icy to the touch.

Naomi shut the heavy wooden door, locking it and sliding a heavy iron bar across. She was shivering violently, her sapphire dress torn and soaked in melting snow, but she ignored her own discomfort. She ran to Luca’s side, kneeling beside the cot.

"Luca, you need to let me look at the wound," she said, her voice shaking.

"No... time..." he muttered, his eyes fluttering. "They'll find... the trail..."

"The snow is covering our tracks," she said, trying to convince herself as much as him. "But if I don't stop this bleeding, you're going to die before they even get here. And I am not letting you die."

Using a hunting knife she found on the cabin’s mantelpiece, she carefully sliced open his sweater. The bullet had torn through his side, leaving a jagged, bleeding wound.

"It didn't hit any major organs, but it's deep," she murmured, analyzing the wound with her analytical, precise mind. "I need to cauterize it. Or sew it."

"There is a first-aid kit... under the floorboards," Luca whispered, his voice weak but his gaze intense. "And a bottle of vodka on the shelf."

Naomi quickly retrieved the supplies. She poured the vodka over the wound to disinfect it. Luca groaned, his entire body tense, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edges of the cot.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she whispered, tears finally escaping her eyes and rolling down her cheeks.

"Don't apologize," he panted, his hand suddenly reaching up to catch her wrist—not with the violent grip of Anton, but with a desperate, passionate need. "You are doing perfect, mia bella."

With trembling but precise fingers, Naomi threaded a surgical needle from the kit. She had never sewn human flesh before, but she focused on the task with the same absolute precision she used for her financial ledgers. Every stitch had to be perfect.

As she worked, Luca watched her face. The firelight flickered across her soft curves, her messy hair, and the fierce determination in her eyes.

"You are beautiful," he muttered, his voice thick with pain and morphine from the kit.

Naomi paused, looking at him. "You're delirious."

"No," he said, his gaze locked onto hers with an intensity that burned hotter than the fire. "In the club... when those superficial idiots laughed at you... I wanted to tear their throats out. You are a queen, Naomi. You take up space because you deserve to rule it. Never let anyone make you feel small."

A sob caught in Naomi's throat. She finished the last stitch and tied it off. She cleaned the blood from his skin, then collapsed against the side of the cot, exhausted, freezing, and utterly overwhelmed.

Luca reached out, his hand wrapping around her waist, pulling her up onto the narrow cot beside him.

"Luca, your wound—"

"Shh," he murmured, pulling her chest against his uninjured side. "Keep me warm. The storm is cold, but you are fire."

Naomi let herself sink into his embrace. Surrounded by the howling wind of the blizzard, wrapped in the arms of the most dangerous man in New York, she finally felt safe. She closed her eyes, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.

But as she drifted off to sleep, she didn't see the silent shadow moving outside the cabin window, watching them through the frosted glass.
