Chapter 2 - The Lion’s Den

The private elevator ascended to the penthouse suite of The Obsidian Room, a place rumored to be the nerve center of the Ferraro empire.

When the doors opened, Naomi walked out into a space that looked more like a fortress than a home. The walls were dark, polished concrete, adorned with priceless Renaissance paintings. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, dizzying view of the twinkling Manhattan skyline.

Luca walked ahead of her, pouring two glasses of amber liquid from a crystal decanter. He didn't ask what she wanted. He simply handed her a glass.

"Drink," he commanded. "Your hands are shaking."

Naomi looked down and realized he was right. Her fingers were trembling violently beneath the oversized sleeves of his coat. She took the glass, her fingers brushing his. It felt like a jolt of static electricity. She took a sip; the liquid was smooth, burning a trail of warmth down her throat.

"I need to leave," Naomi said, trying to summon the professional, stern voice she used during high-stakes corporate audits. "Mr. Ferraro, I appreciate you stepping in down there, but I am a federal contractor. I cannot be seen associating with you. Especially not while your firm is under investigation."

Luca sat down in a massive leather armchair, crossing one long leg over the other. He watched her with the intensity of a hawk analyzing its prey.

"You think you have a choice, Naomi?" he asked, using her first name for the first time. It sounded like a caress and a threat all at once.

"Everyone has a choice."

"Not when they possess a thumb drive containing forty-eight million dollars of missing Russian cartel money," Luca countered smoothly. "Anton Volkov does not leave loose ends. The moment you walk out of this building, you are a dead woman."

Naomi’s breath hitched. She reached into the pocket of her sapphire dress, her fingers wrapping around the tiny metallic drive she had smuggled out of her office.

"How did you know I have it?" she whispered.

"Because I know everything that happens in my city," Luca said. "And because your boss, the illustrious Director Miller, is on my payroll."

The world seemed to tilt beneath Naomi's feet. "Miller? No. He's the one who assigned me to this case. He's a man of integrity—"

"Miller is a man with a gambling debt of three million dollars to the Volkov syndicate," Luca corrected, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "He assigned you to the audit because he thought a plus-size, quiet, meticulous woman would easily get lost in the numbers, miss the anomalies, and rubber-stamp the file. He didn't count on you actually being brilliant."

Luca stood up, walking over to her until he was close enough that she had to tilt her head back to look him in the eyes.

"You found the twelve holding companies within forty-eight hours," Luca said, admiration gleaming in his dark eyes. "You mapped a digital trail that three separate intelligence agencies couldn't crack. You are a genius, Naomi. But your genius has made you a liability to some very powerful, very angry men."

Naomi swallowed hard. "If my boss is corrupt, then I'll go to the FBI. I'll go to the federal prosecutors."

"The FBI has three moles in the Southern District office, all of whom eat dinner at Anton’s table," Luca said, stepping closer. He reached out, his hand gently grasping the lapel of the coat he had given her, pulling her a fraction of an inch closer. "You survive tonight because of this coat, Naomi. You survive because I told this city you belong to me. The moment you walk out of my shadow, they will tear you apart."

"And what do you want?" Naomi asked, her voice shaking but her eyes fierce. "You're the head of the Ferraro family. If that money was routed through your shipping company, you're just as guilty as them."

Luca’s expression darkened. A dangerous, cold aura radiated from him.

"I am a businessman, Miss Bennett. I run shipping, logistics, and real estate. I do not deal in poison, and I do not deal with the Bratva. That forty-eight million was routed through my vessels without my knowledge. Someone inside my own organization is betraying me."

He leaned in, his warm breath fanning across her cheek.

"I don't want your silence, Naomi. I want your brain. I want you to find the traitor who used my ships to smuggle that money. You do that for me, and I will keep you alive. I will destroy Anton Volkov, and I will ensure you never have to look over your shoulder again."

Naomi stared at him, her mind racing. She was a woman who believed in the law. But the law was currently compromised, her boss was a traitor, and a Russian mobster wanted her dead.

"And if I refuse?" she asked.

May you like

Luca's gaze dropped to her lips, then drifted back to her eyes.

"You won't refuse," he murmured. "Because you are smart enough to know that a beast's cage is the safest place to hide when the wolves are hunting."
