Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Audit

The morning sun broke through the clouds, casting a blinding glare over the fresh snow.
Naomi woke up to the smell of cold iron and the sudden, terrifying realization that the cabin door was wide open.
Luca was gone from her side.
"Luca?" she called out, panic rising in her chest.
She stood up, her muscles stiff and aching. She stepped out of the cabin, her eyes squinting against the bright light.
A hundred yards away, in a clearing in the snow, stood a circle of men.
In the center was Luca, pale and bleeding through his bandages, his hands bound behind his back.
And standing in front of him, holding a gold-plated pistol to Luca’s temple, was Arthur Sterling—the federal prosecutor.
Beside Sterling stood Anton Volkov, smiling triumphantly.
"Ah, the sleeping beauty awakens," Sterling sneered as Naomi ran toward them, stopping when two Bratva guards pointed their rifles at her chest.
"Arthur," Naomi gasped. "You're a federal prosecutor. How could you do this?"
"Because federal prosecutors don't make forty-eight million dollars, Naomi," Sterling said with a cold laugh. "But today, I get it all. I get the money, I get to take down the Ferraro empire, and I get to write the narrative. You and Luca died in a tragic shootout over mob money. A tragic loss for the civil service."
"You won't get away with this," Naomi said, her voice rising, filled with a sudden, icy calm. "The data... the transaction map. I didn't just copy it, Arthur. I scheduled it."
Sterling’s smile faltered. "What do you mean?"
"I am an auditor," Naomi said, taking a step forward, her eyes flashing with dangerous intelligence. "I don't just find anomalies; I secure them. Before the power went out at the estate, I uploaded the entire transaction map, along with the digital signatures from your specific courthouse terminal, to a secure cloud server. I set a dead-man's switch."
She pulled her phone from her pocket, showing the screen.
"If I don't enter a bypass code every six hours, the entire file—including your offshore accounts, your emails with Anton, and the names of every mole in the FBI—is automatically sent to the Director of the CIA, the Attorney General, and the New York Times."
Anton’s face went white. "You lying bitch."
"Check your phone, Anton," Naomi said smoothly. "The system sent a ping to your secure servers five minutes ago to verify the connection."
Anton hastily pulled out his phone. His eyes widened in sheer terror as he saw the notification. "She’s telling the truth. The file is live. If she dies, we are ruined."
"Kill her anyway!" Sterling screamed, panicking, his finger tightening on the trigger of his gun. "We can run! We can get to Russia!"
"No, you fool!" Anton yelled, turning his gun on Sterling. "The Bratva will skin me alive if our entire network is exposed! Lower your weapon!"
"I'm not going to prison!" Sterling roared.
In the split second of distraction, Luca moved.
With a roar of pure, animalistic fury, Luca broke the plastic zip-ties around his wrists—he had already loosened them while they were talking. He lunged forward, grabbing Sterling’s gun arm and twisting it violently.
A loud pop echoed as Sterling's shoulder dislocated. He screamed in agony as Luca slammed him into the frozen ground, pinning him with a knee to his chest.
Anton raised his gun to shoot Luca, but before he could pull the trigger, the sound of heavy rotors roared overhead.
Three black, unmarked helicopters descended from the sky, kicking up a massive cloud of snow. Armed tactical teams in tactical gear, bearing the insignia of the Global Financial Crimes Unit, rappelled down, their weapons pointed at the Bratva guards.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.
Anton realized he was utterly defeated. He slowly dropped his gun into the snow, raising his hands in surrender.
Luca, his bandage soaked in fresh blood, slowly stood up. He walked past the arresting officers, his eyes locked entirely on Naomi.
He stopped in front of her.
"A dead-man's switch?" he asked, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking across his rugged face.
"I might have exaggerated the part about the CIA," Naomi whispered, her lips curving into a mischievous grin. "But the New York Times is definitely getting that email if I don't press cancel in the next ten minutes."
Luca threw his arms around her, pulling her into a fierce, passionate kiss. His lips were warm, tasting of copper and snow, and Naomi melted into him, wrapping her arms around his neck as the federal agents secured the scene around them.
When he finally pulled back, he looked down at her, his dark eyes shining with an emotion she had never seen before.
"You are the most dangerous woman I have ever met, Naomi Bennett," he murmured, his hand resting on her waist.
"And you are under audit, Mr. Ferraro," she replied, her eyes sparkling. "I believe you owe me a lot of explanations."
Luca laughed, the sound rich and free, echoing over the snowy mountains.
"I will spend the rest of my life explaining myself to you, mia cara. As long as you promise to never leave my side."
"Under one condition," Naomi said, leaning in close. "I get to keep the coat."
Luca smiled, wrapping his heavy jacket around her shoulders once more. "It always looked better on you anyway."
EPILOGUE: A New AccountOne year later.
The grand ballroom of the New York Plaza was filled with the city's elite.
The silver-clad women from The Obsidian Room were there, standing in the corner, whispering behind their fans. But this time, they weren't mocking. They were watching in envious silence.
Naomi Bennett walked into the room.
She wore a custom-made, stunning royal blue gown that hugged every curve of her body, shimmering under the crystal chandeliers. She didn't look down. She didn't apologize. She walked with the head-turning grace of a woman who knew her worth.
Beside her, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back, was Luca Ferraro.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, but his eyes never wandered to the crowd. His gaze was fixed entirely on his wife.
As they stepped onto the dance floor, Luca leaned down, his lips brushing her ear.
"They are all looking at you," he whispered.
"Let them look," Naomi smiled, leaning her head against his chest as they danced. "They finally realized I'm not taking up their space."
May you like
Luca’s grip tightened, his eyes burning with absolute devotion.
"No, mia bella," he murmured. "You own it."
