Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Victory

We reached the shaded courtyard where a sturdy wooden chess table sat surrounded by blooming flowerbeds and vibrant green grass. The afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the courtyard, warming the crisp autumn air.

Sammy pulled out his chair opposite mine, sitting down with the intense, calculated focus of a seasoned strategist. He reached out and pushed his pawn forward, making the opening move of our daily match.

I looked down at the wooden board, then past it toward the children playing in the courtyard, and finally up at the clear, boundless sky above Chicago.

For years, I believed that power was measured in billions, that strength was defined by how many people you could conquer, and that happiness was something you could buy, store, and lock away in a mansion. I had lost my fortune, lost my empire, and lost the ability to walk on my own two feet.

Yet, sitting here in the sunlight surrounded by people who didn't want a dime of my money, I realized I had never been wealthier.

I moved my knight forward, trapping Sammy’s rook in a classic defensive fork.

Sammy blinked, staring at the board in sudden shock before looking up at me with wide, impressed eyes. "Whoa. Where did you learn that move?"

"From a very wise man who taught me that the best victories aren't the ones you win by force," I smiled, leaning back comfortably in my wheelchair as the breeze rustled through the autumn leaves, "but the ones you build together."

Sammy grinned, reached out, and knocked his own king over in mock defeat. "You win, Mr. Ethan. But I'm taking the rematch tomorrow."

"Deal," I laughed, raising my glass of iced tea to toast the future.

My name is Ethan Caldwell. I may never walk again, but for the first time in my entire life, I was finally running free.
