Chapter 16 - The Siege

The house plunged into absolute silence, save for the rhythmic patter of light rain hitting the windowpanes.
"Stay right behind me, Sammy," I whispered urgently, gripping the armrests of my wheelchair as my heart pounded against my ribs. I reached into the hidden compartment of my desk and pulled out a heavy emergency flashlight, flicking it on to illuminate the hallway.
Rebecca emerged from the kitchen carrying a heavy iron fire poker, her eyes scanning the dark corridor with unwavering focus. "The breaker box outside has been physically sabotaged. Someone cut the main lines."
Before anyone could move, the front door handle jiggled softly. Then, the heavy oak door groaned as a heavy kick struck the frame, splintering the deadbolt.
The door swung open, revealing two masked figures clad in dark tactical gear, stepping silently into the entryway.
"Get into the back study, now!" I hissed, positioning my wheelchair to block the hallway entrance, using my own body as a barricade.
"I'm not leaving you, Mr. Ethan!" Sammy whispered fiercely, refusing to budge, holding a heavy metal paperweight in his small hands like a weapon.
The leading intruder stepped into the beam of my flashlight, raising a heavy suppressor-fitted pistol. "Ethan Caldwell," a harsh, distorted voice sneered. "Mr. Sterling sends his regards. Time to settle old debts."
My mind raced. I couldn't run. I couldn't stand. But I could protect.
Before the intruder could level his weapon, Rebecca lunged forward from the shadows with incredible speed, swinging the heavy iron poker with all her might, striking the intruder's wrist and sending the pistol clattering across the hardwood floor.

The second intruder rushed forward, tackling Rebecca to the floor as a violent struggle erupted in the narrow hallway.
"Sammy, run!" I yelled, throwing my wheelchair forward to ram the second intruder’s knees, knocking him off balance and buying precious seconds.
