Chapter 17 - The Turning Point

The struggle in the hallway was brutal and chaotic. I threw my weight against the second intruder, using the heavy steel frame of my wheelchair to pin him against the wall while Rebecca fought fiercely to subdue the first attacker.
"Get off me, you old cripple!" the intruder snarled, elbowing me hard across the jaw. Pain flashed through my head, but I refused to let go, locking my hands around his tactical vest with desperate strength.
Suddenly, the sharp sound of police sirens wailed in the distance, cutting through the rainy night air with deafening intensity flashing red and blue lights bouncing against the living room walls.
Sammy hadn't run. Instead, he had sprinted to the smart-home terminal in the kitchen, activating the emergency police lockdown protocol he had programmed into the foundation's network weeks prior.
"Police are three blocks away!" Sammy yelled, holding up his smartphone. "The entire perimeter is locked down!"
Realizing they had been compromised and that federal law enforcement was seconds away, the intruders panicked. The first attacker shoved Rebecca aside, grabbed his partner, and bolted out the shattered front door into the rainy night, disappearing into the dark alleys before the first squad car screeched to a halt in our driveway.
Within moments, flashing lights flooded the house. Uniformed officers swarmed the entryway, securing the perimeter and checking us for injuries.
Rebecca stood up, wiping blood and dust from her knees, breathing heavily but unharmed. I slumped back in my wheelchair, my jaw throbbing, adrenaline fading into sheer exhaustion.
Sammy walked over, knelt beside my wheelchair, and gently placed his small hand on my arm.
"Are you okay, Mr. Ethan?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly for the first time.
May you like
I looked down at him, wrapping my hand around his, feeling an overwhelming wave of love and protection.
"I'm okay, Sammy," I whispered, smiling through the pain. "Because of you, we're all going to be okay."
