Chapter 1 - THE RUNAWAY PROTEGÉThe ballroom lights glinted off the crystal chandeliers, casting razor-sharp shadows across the crowd. Daniel Mercer’s heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer against reinforced concrete. His eyes remained locked on the figure retreating up the grand marble staircase, shoving past wealthy socialites who gasped in indignation.

It was Evelyn Vance.

Evelyn was not just a senior partner at Mercer Legal—she was his late father’s protégé. She was the woman who had sat beside Daniel’s hospital bed six months ago when he was recovering from a collapsed scaffolding accident. She was the one who had brought him hot broth, managed his power of attorney, and swore on her own career that the Mercer empire was safe in her hands.

"Evelyn!" Daniel’s voice boomed across the ballroom, cutting through the terrified murmurs of three hundred guests like a thunderclap.

She didn't look back. Her designer heels clicked aggressively against the white marble as she bolted toward the upper east wing—the private quarters where his father’s master vault was located.

"Stop her!" Charles Whitmore screamed, his voice cracking into a desperate pitch as he lunged toward the security guards. "Don't let him near the servers! Security, clear the building!"

The security team, caught between a man wearing a yellow safety vest holding the ancestral gold key and the disgraced host sweating through his velvet tuxedo, hesitated. But Daniel didn't wait for them. Throwing off his heavy, dirt-streaked leather jacket, he bolted up the stairs three steps at a time, his steel-toed work boots leaving heavy dust prints on the pristine velvet runner.

"Raymond, get the flash drive!" Charles yelled from below, scrambling toward the mahogany side doors with his attorney. "The midnight upload is locked in! If the server stays online for forty more minutes, the land registry auto-executes!"

11:22 PM.

Daniel rounded the corner of the second-floor gallery, his lungs burning. He saw Evelyn at the end of the long hallway, desperately trying to punch a digital override code into the heavy steel door of his father’s private study. Her hands were shaking so violently she mistyped the sequence twice, the electronic lock chiming an angry red error.

"Evelyn! Stop!" Daniel yelled, slowing his pace as he approached her. "My father treated you like a daughter! He paid for your law school! He gave you five percent of the holding company!"

Evelyn spun around, pressing her back against the reinforced door. Her pristine blonde hair was coming loose, and the polished veneer of a top-tier corporate attorney was completely shattered. In her hand, she clutched a sleek black satellite modem—a portable encrypted relay device capable of overriding local network blackouts.

"You don't understand, Daniel!" she cried out, her eyes wide with frantic terror. "Your father didn't build an empire! He built a cage! Do you have any idea what he did before he died?"

"He built a legacy!" Daniel snapped, taking two cautious steps forward. "He restored half of Texas!"

"He uncovered them!" Evelyn shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at the satellite modem. "The Vanguard Group isn't an investment company, Daniel! They're land predators. Your father found out they were using local construction firms to launder offshore cartel capital. He was going to turn them over to the federal grand jury the week he died. But then he 'mysteriously' suffered a massive heart attack!"

Daniel froze. The air in the hallway felt suddenly frigid. "What are you talking about?"

"Your father’s death wasn't natural, Daniel," Evelyn whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "And your scaffolding 'accident' six months ago? That wasn't a structural failure. They cut the support cables! They told me if I didn't forge your signature to transfer the deed before the statute of limitations expired tonight, they would finish the job on you. Charles Whitmore isn't the mastermind—he's just the frontman Vanguard hired to host this public showcase to legitimize the sale!"

Before Daniel could process the horrifying truth, a heavy crash echoed from the bottom of the staircase. Heavy, rhythmic footsteps began ascending the stairs.

Three men in dark suits, their jackets bulging at the ribs, stepped into the corridor. These were not local security guards. These were mercenaries.
