Chapter 7 - THE RECKONINGBy 3:00 AM, the rain had finally stopped.

The luxury sports cars were gone from the driveway, replaced by line after line of federal law enforcement vehicles, flashing blue lights illuminating the wet oak trees surrounding the Mercer mansion.
The guests had been questioned and cleared. Charles Whitmore, Raymond Cole, and six senior executives from the Vanguard Capital Group were currently sitting in federal holding cells in downtown Austin, facing charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and racketeering.
In the quiet, dimly lit master study upstairs, Daniel sat in his father’s old leather armchair. The room was cold, the smell of burnt electrical wiring still lingering faintly in the air from the downstairs hallway.
Evelyn Vance stood near the stained-glass window, holding a hot cup of coffee. She had changed into a dry Mercer Development sweatshirt Daniel had given her.
"The State Attorney General just issued a press release," Evelyn said softly, breaking the long silence. "The fraudulent transfer has been officially expunged from the county records. Vanguard’s assets have been frozen nationwide. They won't be coming back, Daniel."
Daniel didn't answer right away. He was looking at the gold family key resting on the desk in front of him.
"You could have taken their money, Evelyn," Daniel said, looking up at her. "Why did you help me in the basement?"
Evelyn walked over to the desk, her head bowed in deep shame. "Because when your father hired me ten years ago, I was broke, sleeping in my car, fighting to pay off my mother's medical bills. He gave me a job when no one else would. When Vanguard threatened to kill you, I panicked. I thought if I played along just enough to keep you alive, I could find a way out later. But when I saw you walk into that ballroom in your work clothes... standing up to all of them... I realized your father’s strength wasn't in his money. It was in you."
Daniel stared at her for a long moment. Then, he picked up the gold key and slid it into his pocket.
"You forged my signature under duress, Evelyn," Daniel said calmly. "The AG's office knows you acted as a whistleblower. I won't press charges against you."
Evelyn gasped, tears springing to her eyes. "Daniel... I don't know what to say—"
"But you're fired from Mercer Legal," Daniel added directly, his eyes cold and unwavering. "Effective immediately. You're a brilliant lawyer, Evelyn. But trust is something you only build once. If the foundation cracks, you tear down the wall."

Evelyn swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "I understand. Thank you... for not putting me in prison."
She set her coffee mug down on the desk, picked up her coat, and quietly walked out of the room, leaving Daniel alone in the quiet house of his ancestors.
