Chapter 6 - THE SHADOWS OF TRUTHFor ten agonizing seconds, nobody moved. Nobody breathed.

Then, the emergency back-up battery lights clicked on, casting an eerie red glow across the ruined ballroom.

Charles Whitmore was kneeling on the stage floor, desperately hitting the power button on the dead laptop. "No... no, no! The upload! It was at ninety-nine percent! TURN IT BACK ON! RAYMOND, TURN IT BACK ON!"

"The main line is fried, Charles," Raymond said, dropping his head into his hands, his face completely drained of color. "The circuit is dead. The script timed out."

12:01 AM. Midnight had passed.

The automated transfer window had expired. The legal title of the Mercer Estate remained 100% in the name of Daniel Mercer.

Heavy iron boots thundered through the front doors as a tactical team of Texas State Troopers, flanked by federal agents, burst into the ballroom with rifles raised.

"STATE POLICE! NOBODY MOVE! HANDS ON YOUR HEADS!"

Bright flashlight beams swept across the room. Within seconds, federal agents surrounded the stage.

Daniel walked calmly up the steps of the stage, his dirty work boots stepping onto the polished mahogany platform. He stood directly over Charles Whitmore, who was cowering on his knees, clutching the dead laptop like a dying man holding a broken life raft.

"Get up, Charles," Daniel said quietly.

"You ruined everything..." Charles whimpered, looking up with bloodshot, frantic eyes. "We were going to be billionaires! Vanguard was going to pay us fifty million dollars each! You're just a filthy contractor who plays in the dirt! You don't deserve this legacy!"

"My father built this state with his bare hands," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. "You tried to steal it with a pen. But you forgot one thing, Charles."

Daniel pulled the gold encrypted drive from his vest and handed it directly to the lead Federal Agent standing beside him.

"What's that?" the agent asked, inspecting the drive.

"That," Daniel said, staring down into Charles's terrified eyes, "is the complete evidence file my father gathered before he died. It contains the bank accounts, the shell companies, the offshore wire transfers, and the names of every single investor in Vanguard—including Mr. Whitmore, Mr. Cole, and the crooked judges who authorized the fraudulent court orders."

Charles’s jaw dropped open. He looked at Raymond Cole, who instantly dropped to his knees and threw his hands behind his back.

"I'll talk!" Raymond screamed frantically to the federal agents. "I'll give you everyone! It was Charles! Charles hired the mercenaries! Charles paid off the coroner to cover up old man Mercer's heart attack!"

"You rat!" Charles screamed, throwing himself at his attorney.

Two federal agents immediately tackled Charles to the floor, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

As Charles was dragged down the stage steps, past the hundreds of wealthy guests who were recording his humiliation on their smartphones, he looked back at Daniel one last time.

"It's not over, Mercer!" Charles yelled, his voice cracking as he was pulled toward the exit. "Vanguard is bigger than you! They will come back for this land!"

"Tell them to bring hard hats," Daniel replied coolly. "Because I'm building a wall around this place they'll never break."
