Three weeks later, Daniel stood inside the quiet, restored master study of the mansion.
The heavy oak desk was covered in new legal documents—not deeds of sale, but permanent land trust covenants. The entire fifty-acre estate, along with the three million acres of state water reserves identified in his father's buried archive, was officially protected under a perpetual public conservation trust managed by Mercer Development.
There was a soft knock at the open study door.
Evelyn Vance stood in the doorway holding a briefcase. She looked relieved, though a quiet humility hung over her.
"The State Bar cleared my license," she said softly. "Thanks to your testimony about my cooperation, I won't be disbarred."
Daniel turned from the window. "You earned it, Evelyn. You did the right thing when it mattered most."
She slid an envelope onto the desk. "These are the final incorporation papers for the Thomas Mercer Vocational Academy. The state has granted full accreditation. We already have four thousand applications for the first class."
Daniel looked down at the papers, a deep sense of peace washing over him for the first time in years.
