Chapter 5 - THE BALLROOM SHOWDOWN11:56 PM. Four minutes until midnight.

In the grand ballroom, the atmosphere had deteriorated into sheer chaos. The fire alarms were still wailing softly, though the main sprinkler system in the upper halls had been manually shut down by panicked staff.

Charles Whitmore stood on the elevated stage, sweating profusely through his thousand-dollar suit, holding a wireless microphone while his attorney, Raymond Cole, frantically typed on a sleek metallic laptop hooked into the mansion’s high-speed fiber terminal.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please!" Charles screamed into the microphone, his voice echoing frantically over the noise of murmuring guests trying to reach the exits. "There is no emergency! Just a minor electrical glitch caused by a trespasser! The charity auction will resume shortly! Please remain in the main hall!"

"Charles, hurry the hell up!" Raymond hissed under his breath, his eyes glued to a progress bar on the laptop screen. "The automated cloud transfer is at ninety-two percent! But it requires the physical local network authorization key to overwrite the county title log!"

"Where are those useless mercenaries?!" Charles spat, looking frantically toward the grand staircase. "They were supposed to bring Daniel down ten minutes ago!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors beneath the grand staircase were blown open with a violent thud!

The crowd shrieked and parted like the Red Sea.

Daniel Mercer strode into the ballroom.

He was dripping wet from the sprinkler system, covered in concrete dust from the basement, his work boots leaving heavy, dark mud tracks across the pristine white marble. In his right hand, he carried a heavy five-foot steel crowbar he had grabbed from the maintenance workshop. In his left hand, he held the glowing gold encrypted drive.

Beside him walked Evelyn Vance, holding her phone aloft, live-streaming the entire room directly to the Texas State Attorney General’s emergency portal.

"Charles Whitmore!" Daniel’s voice rang out like an executioner’s gavel, vibrating through the massive space. "Your time is up!"

The remaining two armed mercenaries stepped forward, drawing their weapons in front of the terrified high-society crowd.

"Shoot him!" Charles roared into the microphone, completely losing his mind. "I don't care about the guests! Shoot him now!"

"Touch that trigger," Evelyn screamed, holding up her phone, "and five hundred thousand people on the Texas Department of Public Safety live-stream will watch you execute an unarmed property owner! The State Troopers are already at the outer gates!"

Outside the high stained-glass windows, red and blue police lights suddenly began flashing through the heavy rainstorm. Siren wails echoed across the surrounding hills.

The mercenaries looked at each other, then at the flashing police lights outside, and slowly lowered their weapons, stepping back into the crowd.

"Useless cowards!" Charles screamed. He lunged toward Raymond’s laptop on the DJ booth. "Give me that!"

11:58 PM. Two minutes until midnight.

Charles grabbed the mouse, aiming the cursor directly over the final red button on the screen: [EXECUTE FORCED EMPOWERMENT TRANSFER].

"If I can't have the land, I'll bankrupt your company in legal fees for the next thirty years!" Charles shrieked, his thumb hovering over the clicker. "I'm pushing it!"

Daniel didn't try to run to the stage. He knew he couldn't reach it in time.

Instead, he hoisted the heavy, five-foot steel crowbar onto his shoulder, wound his body back like a major-league baseball player, and hove it across the ballroom with terrifying precision!

WHAM!

The heavy steel crowbar sailed through the air and slammed directly into the main electrical breaker panel mounted on the side wall behind the stage, shattering the primary junction box in a massive shower of white-hot electrical sparks!

BANG!

Every single light in the ballroom instantly went black. The laptops, the servers, the Wi-Fi routers, and the sound system died instantly.

The entire room plunged into absolute, pitch-black silence, broken only by the sound of heavy rain battering the windows.
