CHAPTER THREE – THE WOMAN WHO RAN... AND THE SECRET SHE COULDN'T HIDE

Victoria ran without looking back.

The elegant woman who had spent years pretending to be the perfect future wife of billionaire Richard Hawthorne was now sprinting barefoot through the quiet streets, her expensive dress torn and stained with dirt.

Behind her came Richard's furious voice.

"Victoria!"

She didn't stop.

She couldn't.

Everything she had spent three years building had collapsed in less than five minutes.

The missing Rolex.

The false accusation.

The carefully rehearsed tears.

Every lie had been destroyed by a tiny blue toy dinosaur.

Back at the entrance of Hawthorne Heights, Emily knelt beside the triplets, gently checking their injuries.

Most of the blood came from cuts on their feet after climbing through the broken fence.

Still, seeing them trembling in fear shattered her heart.

"It's okay," she whispered.

"I'm here."

The boys wrapped their arms around her once again.

Richard stood only a few feet away.

None of them moved toward him.

The realization hurt more than he could describe.

For years he believed providing luxury, private schools, and unlimited opportunities made him a good father.

But in the moment his children were terrified...

They had run to Emily.

Not him.

Richard slowly approached.

"Ethan..."

The oldest of the triplets looked up.

"Did I scare you?"

The little boy hesitated before answering.

"You didn't scare us."

Richard felt a small sense of relief.

Then Ethan quietly added,

"You just never listened."

Those four words struck Richard harder than any business failure he had ever suffered.

Police officers quickly surrounded the neighborhood.

One detective carefully took the toy dinosaur into evidence.

Another questioned the security staff.

Within minutes, disturbing details began to emerge.

One guard stepped forward nervously.

"Mr. Hawthorne..."

"What is it?"

"I saw Miss Lane enter the nursery after Miss Carter left."

Richard frowned.

"For how long?"

"About fifteen minutes."

"Was anyone else with her?"

The guard swallowed.

"I... I wasn't supposed to say anything."

Richard's voice became cold.

"Say it."

"I saw a man leave through the service entrance."

Emily looked up immediately.

"What man?"

"I'd never seen him before."

The guard described him.

Tall.

Gray suit.

Black baseball cap.

A scar running across his left cheek.

Richard searched his memory.

Nothing.

But Emily suddenly froze.

"I know that description."

Everyone turned toward her.

"I saw him two weeks ago."

"Where?"

"He was standing outside the boys' preschool."

Richard's expression darkened.

"What?"

"I thought he was just another parent."

She looked down at the children.

"But when Liam waved at him..."

"He immediately walked away."

Silence fell over the group.

Someone had been watching the boys.

Long before today.

Meanwhile...

Victoria ducked into an underground parking garage several blocks away.

Her breathing was ragged.

She pulled another phone from inside the lining of her purse.

Unlike the first one, this phone contained only one saved contact.

She pressed call.

The man answered on the second ring.

"You were caught."

Victoria nearly screamed.

"They have the recording!"

"I know."

"You promised everything would be under control!"

The man's voice remained calm.

"I promised you money."

"I never promised there would be no risks."

"They're coming after me!"

A long silence followed.

Finally, the man asked only one question.

"Did they discover the child?"

Victoria looked around nervously.

"No."

"Good."

"What about me?"

Another pause.

Then the reply came.

"You were never part of the real plan."

The line went dead.

Victoria stared at the silent phone.

Her hands began shaking uncontrollably.

For the first time...

She realized she had been used from the very beginning.

Back at the Hawthorne mansion, detectives searched Victoria's bedroom.

Everything appeared immaculate.

Designer handbags.

Luxury jewelry.

Perfectly organized closets.

Too perfect.

Emily quietly walked into the room.

Something felt wrong.

She looked around slowly before stopping beside the large vanity mirror.

There was a faint scratch on the marble floor beneath it.

"As if it has been moved many times," she whispered.

Richard walked over.

"You think something's hidden?"

Emily nodded.

Together, they pushed the heavy vanity aside.

Behind it was a narrow wall safe.

The detective forced it open.

Everyone expected cash.

Instead, they found three items.

A stack of fake passports.

A burner phone.

And a sealed envelope addressed in neat handwriting.

FOR RICHARD HAWTHORNE — OPEN ONLY AFTER EMILY CARTER IS GONE.

Richard's heart pounded as he broke the seal.

Inside was a single typed letter.

Richard, if you're reading this, Emily Carter is no longer standing between us. The next step can finally begin. Remember our agreement. The children must never discover who they really are.

Richard read the final line twice.

His hands started trembling.

"There... there was an agreement?"

Emily stared at him.

"You've never seen this before?"

Richard slowly shook his head.

"I swear."

The detective carefully examined the paper.

"No signature."

"No fingerprints."

"Whoever wrote this knew exactly how to avoid leaving evidence."

Just then, one of the officers rushed into the room.

"Detective!"

"What is it?"

"We've located Victoria."

Richard stepped forward.

"Where?"

The officer's expression turned grim.

"Her car was found abandoned near the river."

"And Victoria?"

The officer hesitated.

"She's gone."

"No body."

"No phone."

"No trace."

Only one message had been written across the windshield in bright red lipstick.

YOU'RE CHASING THE WRONG PERSON.

Richard stared at the words.

Emily looked toward the frightened triplets standing in the doorway.

Deep inside, she knew the nightmare was only beginning.

May you like

Because Victoria had never been the mastermind.

She had only been the bait.
