CHAPTER SIX – THE SECRET BENEATH THE HOSPITAL

The following morning, Richard drove Emily and the triplets to St. Gabriel Medical Center.

If someone had manipulated the DNA records, they needed the original birth files.

The hospital director welcomed Richard personally.

"I'm sorry for your loss all those years ago."

Richard nodded silently.

"We need every document from the day my sons were born."

The director's smile faded.

"I'm afraid there's a problem."

"What problem?"

"The records disappeared."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

Emily exchanged a worried glance with Richard.

"Who accessed them?"

The director checked the archive log.

His face slowly lost all color.

"There was only one visitor."

"Who?"

He whispered the name.

"Your uncle... Charles Hawthorne."

Richard clenched his fists.

"My uncle was supposed to be dead."

"So we believed."

The director led them into the hospital basement, where old paper records had once been stored.

Dust covered everything.

Shelves stood half empty.

One cabinet had been forced open years earlier.

Emily searched the room while the detectives photographed the scene.

Then Liam suddenly wandered toward an old storage wall.

"Miss Emily?"

"What is it?"

"I hear something."

Everyone fell silent.

A faint mechanical humming echoed behind the concrete.

Detectives pulled the shelving unit aside.

Hidden behind it was a reinforced steel door no blueprint mentioned.

One officer forced it open.

The room beyond looked untouched for years.

Computers.

Medical equipment.

Stacks of confidential files.

And on the far wall...

Hundreds of photographs.

Not of Richard.

Not of Victoria.

Not even of the triplets.

Every photograph was of Emily Carter.

As a teenager.

In college.

Working at her first job.

Holding newborn Liam in the hospital.

Standing outside grocery stores.

Walking home alone.

Richard stared in disbelief.

"They weren't watching my children..."

Emily slowly stepped backward.

"They were watching me."

Pinned in the center of the wall was a faded photograph taken nearly thirty years earlier.

It showed a smiling young nurse holding a newborn baby.

Emily's hands began to shake.

She recognized the nurse instantly.

It was her mother.

Beneath the picture, someone had written a single sentence in red ink:

"She never learned the truth about the child she saved."

Emily felt the room spinning around her.

"What child?"

No one answered.

Because at that exact moment, Detective Harris received an urgent phone call.

He listened for several seconds before looking at Richard.

His face was pale.

"Mr. Hawthorne..."

"What happened?"

"We've traced the private jet."

"Where is it?"

"It never left the country."

Richard frowned.

"Then where did it go?"

The detective swallowed.

"It landed less than twenty miles from here..."

"...at an abandoned military research facility that officially doesn't exist."

Emily looked down at Liam's star-shaped birthmark.

For the first time, she realized this had never been about inheritance.

Someone had spent decades preparing for the moment that little boy was born.

And whatever secret waited inside that abandoned facility...

It was worth killing for.
