CHAPTER FOUR – THE MAN BEHIND VICTORIA

Victoria had never run so fast in her life.
High heels flew from her feet as she sprinted across the quiet neighborhood, ignoring the shocked stares of passing drivers.
Behind her, Richard's voice thundered through the street.
"Stop her!"
Two security guards gave chase.
Victoria glanced over her shoulder.
Too close.
She reached into her purse with trembling hands and pulled out a disposable phone.
One button.
One call.
He answered immediately.
"You failed," the man's calm voice said.
"They have the recording!" Victoria cried.
"They know everything!"
Silence.
Then a cold reply.
"I warned you never to panic."
"They're coming!"
Another pause.
Finally, the man spoke four words that made Victoria stop breathing.
"Then eliminate the witnesses."
The line went dead.
Victoria stared at the phone in horror.
"Witnesses?"
He meant...
The children.
For the first time, she realized she had never been his partner.
She had only been another disposable pawn.
Back at the neighborhood entrance, Richard knelt in front of his sons.
His hands trembled as he looked at the bruises on Noah's arm.
"I'm so sorry."
The words felt unfamiliar.
"I should have listened."
Ethan looked at him with tears in his eyes.
"You didn't believe Miss Emily."
Richard lowered his head.
"I know."
Emily stood quietly beside the boys.
She had imagined this moment countless times.
Richard apologizing.
Being proven innocent.
Yet none of it brought satisfaction.
Because something felt terribly wrong.
She replayed the recording in her mind.
One sentence refused to leave her thoughts.
Once she's fired...
Not "once the watch is found."
Not "once Richard believes us."
Someone had planned every step weeks in advance.
This wasn't revenge.
It was an operation.
Emily suddenly looked toward the mansion.
"Richard."
He turned.
"How many people knew your security system would be offline today?"
Richard frowned.
"Only my head of security..."
His voice trailed off.
The realization struck both of them at the same time.
The cameras hadn't failed.
Someone had turned them off.
From the inside.
Inside the Hawthorne mansion, Head of Security Daniel Mercer sat alone in the surveillance room.
Every monitor displayed a black screen.
He calmly removed a flash drive from the control computer.
On it were years of security recordings.
Business meetings.
Private conversations.
Financial documents.
Everything.
His phone buzzed.
A single text appeared.
Phase One failed. Proceed to Phase Two.
Daniel smiled.
"So... it's finally time."
He opened a hidden compartment beneath the desk.
Inside rested a pistol.
A fake passport.
And an envelope marked:
HAWTHORNE LEGACY PROJECT.
Outside, police cars began arriving.
Detectives separated Richard and Emily for questioning.
One officer approached with a serious expression.
"Mr. Hawthorne..."
"What is it?"
"We've identified the owner of the disposable phone Miss Lane used."
Richard expected the name of a criminal.
Instead, the detective handed him a photograph.
Richard's face turned ghostly white.
"No..."
Emily looked over his shoulder.
The photograph showed a distinguished man in his sixties.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
A familiar smile.
"Who is he?" Emily asked.
Richard barely managed to whisper the answer.
"My uncle..."
"The man who founded Hawthorne Technologies with my father."
Emily frowned.
"I thought he died years ago."
Richard swallowed hard.
"So did I."
Miles away, inside an abandoned private airfield, an older man watched the breaking news on a television.
Victoria's face flashed across every channel.
The anchor described her as the prime suspect in a conspiracy targeting billionaire Richard Hawthorne.
The man chuckled softly.
"They're still looking at the wrong person."
He closed the laptop in front of him.
On its screen was a complete file on Richard's triplets.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
DNA reports.
One page was highlighted in red.
CONFIDENTIAL — DO NOT DISCLOSE
The old man smiled.
"You never asked the right question, Richard."
"You were too busy asking who wanted your fortune..."
He looked toward the waiting private jet.
"...when you should have been asking why your sons were chosen in the first place."
As the aircraft engines roared to life, he slipped the confidential DNA file into a leather briefcase.

The truth hidden inside was powerful enough to destroy the Hawthorne family forever.
And Richard had no idea that the greatest betrayal in his life had begun long before Victoria ever walked through his front door.
