Chapter 4 - THE PENTHOUSE ENCOUNTER

The private elevator doors slid open on the fiftieth floor, revealing the sprawling, glass-walled executive penthouse that overlooked the entire city of Chicago. The morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished white marble floors.
Adrian strode out, his stride long and purposeful, with Martha walking steadily beside him and Chloe close behind with the tablet.
"Chloe, patch me into the master terminal," Adrian commanded, walking toward the massive mahogany desk at the center of the room.
Before Chloe could reach the console, a slow, mocking round of applause echoed from the private lounge area near the wet bar.
"Bravo, Adrian. Truly cinematic," a smooth, cultured voice drifted through the spacious room.
Adrian froze. His entire body went rigid.
From the shadows of the lounge stepped a tall, silver-haired man wearing an immaculate navy blazer and holding a crystal glass of scotch. He looked older than he had thirty-two years ago, but the piercing, predatory eyes were unmistakable.
"Jonathan Vance," Adrian whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "My father's primary legal counsel... and the executor of his estate."
Jonathan took a slow sip of his drink, his expression entirely unbothered by the heavily armed security guards stationed at the elevator doors behind Adrian.
"Not just legal counsel, my boy," Jonathan corrected with a thin, condescending smile. "The architect of your entire fortune. Did you really think Arthur Cole was smart enough to build a multi-billion-dollar empire on his own? Arthur was the muscle and the face; I was the brain. And Charles? Charles was just the loyal dog fetching the papers."
Martha stepped forward, her eyes narrowing with a deep, ancestral hatred. "You're the one who threatened me in the hospital room. You're the one who handed me the forged papers."
Jonathan turned his gaze toward Martha, his smile fading into a look of cold indifference. "Ah, the ghost returns. You know, Mrs. Cole—or whatever your real name is—you were remarkably cooperative back then. Five million dollars and a brand-new identity in a sleepy midwestern town. You should have stayed there. Coming back to this tower was a catastrophic mistake."
"The only mistake was letting you walk free for thirty-two years," Adrian growled, stepping in front of his mother. He reached into his jacket, his hand hovering near his phone, ready to summon the federal authorities. "It's over, Jonathan. The vault is open. The files are mirrored. The timer is running."
Jonathan let out a low, gravelly chuckle. He set his crystal glass down on the glass coffee table with a sharp clink.
"The timer?" Jonathan raised an eyebrow, pulling a small, sleek remote control from his pocket. He pressed a single button.
Suddenly, every monitor, television screen, and digital display inside the penthouse flickered to life. Instead of displaying a data leak or a corporate document, they broadcasted a live feed of the main street outside Cole Meridian Tower.
Police cruisers with flashing red and blue lights were pulling up to the main entrance. News vans from every major network were screeching to a halt, reporters spilling out onto the sidewalk with microphones.
"You think Charles’s little dead-man’s switch was meant to destroy the company, Adrian?" Jonathan’s voice rose, filled with a chilling, triumphant glee. "No. That was the bait. Charles was a liability; he knew too much about the old fires. So I let you lock him up. I let you trigger his little program."
Adrian’s breath caught. "What did you do?"

"I redirected the data stream," Jonathan smiled coldly. "The files aren't going to the SEC or the media. They’re going to the Department of Justice—accompanied by a signed confession from the majority shareholder and CEO of Cole Meridian Logistics: Adrian Cole."
Chloe gasped, staring at her tablet in absolute horror. "Mr. Cole... he's right! The destination IP address just rerouted! The signature on the federal submission packet... it’s your biometric thumbprint from the executive login!"
