Chapter 6 - THE ALLIANCE IN THE SHADOWS

"Mr. Cole! Can you hear me?" Chloe dropped to her knees beside Adrian, frantically tapping her tablet to check his vitals while keeping an eye on the door.
Adrian groaned, pushing himself up onto his elbows. The electrical current was fading, leaving a dull, throbbing ache in his shoulder. He looked around the vast, silent penthouse. The security detail Jonathan had left behind was stationed outside the glass doors, but inside, they were completely isolated.
"My mother... where did they take her?" Adrian rasped, his voice rough.
"They took her down to the lower security holding facility, same as Charles," Chloe said, her fingers dancing across the mobile terminal. "Mr. Cole, we’re locked out of the core network. Every administrative password has been revoked. We are officially digital ghosts in our own building."
Martha, who had managed to slip away from the guards during the initial chaos by ducking behind a structural pillar while Adrian took the taser dart, crawled out from the shadows near the wet bar.
"They didn't search me," Martha whispered, holding up a small, old-fashioned mechanical key.
Adrian blinked, looking at the key in disbelief. "Mom? Where did you get that?"
"When Charles gave me this job eleven months ago," Martha explained, her eyes burning with fierce determination, "he made me clean the executive washrooms and the private archive rooms on this floor. He thought I was just an illiterate janitor. But he didn't know that before the fire in Detroit, before everything was taken from me... I was an architectural draftsman."
Chloe’s eyes widened. "You... you know the structural layout of this tower?"
"Better than the architects do," Martha nodded firmly. "Arthur Cole had a private panic room installed behind the master boardroom—a secure analog communication hub that bypasses the digital servers entirely. It was designed before the internet, built with hardwired copper telegraph lines that go straight to the federal appellate court downtown."
Adrian slowly stood up, brushing the dust from his suit. The pain in his shoulder was replaced by a cold, calculated surge of adrenaline.
"Can you get us there without triggering the security sensors?" Adrian asked, looking at his mother with newfound awe.
"Follow me," Martha said, inserting the small mechanical key into an inconspicuous panel behind a decorative wall-hanging.

A section of the mahogany-paneled wall swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow stairwell spiraling downward into the heart of the building.
"Let's go reclaim our empire," Adrian said, helping his mother into the passage.
