Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A CORPORATE CRIME

The rain beat a frantic tattoo against the side of Adrian Vale’s matte-black Maybach. Inside the leather-lined interior, the air felt dense enough to shatter. Adrian stared down at my palm. Resting in the center of my calloused hand was the tiny, blood-smeared fragment of black medical-grade polymer. It was no larger than a grain of rice, but the micro-etching along its fractured edge bore a serial number that made the billionaire’s breath catch in his throat.

V-CORE-909.

“Where did you get this?” Adrian’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried the chilling weight of an executioner's blade. His knuckles were bone-white as he gripped the steering wheel.

“It wasn't a congenital defect, Mr. Vale,” I said, shivering in the freezing downpour, my wet clothes sticking to my skin. “Your son wasn't born deaf. He was engineered into silence. That fragment was wedged deep behind his eardrum, pressing against his vestibular nerve. It’s a proprietary neuro-acoustic dampener. It didn't just block sound—it emitted a counter-frequency that induced acute migraines, spatial disorientation, and complete auditory shutdown whenever low-frequency vibrations hit it.”

Adrian turned his head sharply, his eyes wild with a mixture of horror and dawning fury. “That’s impossible. That technology is restricted. It’s part of the experimental neural-interface pipeline developed by Vale BioCorp’s defense division. It’s classified under Project Echo.”

“Then you might want to ask your chief operating officer, Dr. Harrison Vance, why a prototype designed to suppress auditory processing in infantry soldiers was found inside a seven-year-old boy’s skull,” I replied, looking him dead in the eye.

Adrian didn’t answer. Instead, he slammed his foot on the accelerator, the engine roaring as the car tore away from the curb, leaving the gates of his own estate behind. We weren't going back to the mansion. We were going straight to Vale General Hospital—the crown jewel of his medical empire, where the architects of this nightmare thought their secrets were safe.
