Chapter 6 - THE SILENCE BROKEN

With the conspirators detained, Adrian and I rushed back to the pediatric ICU penthouse suite where Milo had been moved. The room was bathed in soft, warm light, completely stripped of the clinical coldness that usually defined Vale General.

When we pushed the door open, my breath caught in my throat.

Milo was sitting up in bed. The medical bandages around his right ear had been neatly adjusted by a team of trusted pediatric specialists brought in by Adrian. But it wasn't the medical equipment that stopped us in our tracks.

It was the sound.

Soft, classical piano music was playing from a portable speaker on the bedside table. Milo wasn't covering his ear anymore. He was holding a small wooden toy truck, turning the wheels slowly, listening to the metallic click of the axle.

When he heard the door open, his small head snapped toward us. His big, luminous eyes locked onto Adrian.

For the first time in seven years, there was no fear in those eyes. Only wonder.

Adrian crossed the room in three rapid strides. He didn't care about his expensive suit, his billionaire status, or his corporate empire. He dropped to his knees beside the hospital bed, burying his face in the edge of the white sheets, his shoulders shaking as he wept silent, heavy tears of pure redemption.

Milo watched his father cry for a moment. Then, with small, hesitant movements, the boy reached out. His tiny fingers touched Adrian’s dark hair, exactly the way he had touched my lips earlier that day, feeling the vibration of his father’s grief.

“Dad,” Milo whispered again. His voice was hoarse, unused, and clumsy, but it was the most beautiful sound in the world.

Adrian looked up, his face stained with tears, and grabbed Milo’s hand, kissing his knuckles over and over again. “I’m here, buddy. I’m right here. I’m never leaving you again.”

He turned his head slowly, looking past Milo’s bed to where I stood quietly by the doorway, fading into the background, feeling like an outsider who had crossed a line she shouldn't have.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Adrian asked softly, standing up.
