Chapter 3 - The Smile That Revealed the TrapThe silence in the private dining room was absolute, save for the muffled strains of the string quartet playing a Strauss waltz down the hall.

Adrien pulled back slowly, his eyes locked on Vanessa. But there was no color draining from Vanessa’s face. No gasp of heartbreak. No tears of a betrayed bride-to-be.

Instead, Vanessa’s red lips curved into a sharp, triumphant smile that sent a spike of pure ice straight down Maya’s spine.

"Oh, darling," Vanessa purred, stepping fully into the room with her father, Richard Sinclair, right behind her. "You shouldn't have waited for the official ceremony to give the hired help a parting gift."

Maya stepped back, her hands flying to her apron. "Miss Sinclair, I—"

"Save it, little cleaning girl," Vanessa interrupted, her voice dripping with venomous amusement. She turned to her father, gesturing dramatically. "Look at them, Daddy. Exactly as we calculated."

Adrien’s expression shifted from surprise to something lethal. The exhaustion vanished from his face, replaced by the cold, calculating focus of a apex predator who had just realized he walked into a hunter’s blind.

"Calculated," Adrien repeated, his voice dropping an octave. "Explain yourself, Vanessa."

Richard Sinclair stepped forward, a smug, gray-haired man whose multi-billion-dollar empire thrived on corporate kneecapping. He adjusted his silk tie and chuckled.

"It’s quite simple, Adrien, my boy," Richard said smoothly. "You were getting cold feet. We saw it in your board votes last week. You were hesitating on the merger terms. A man in love with his duty can be managed, but a man having doubts? A man having a crisis of conscience? He needs a push."

Vanessa stepped closer to Adrien, her eyes flashing with malice. "So I planted the rumors about your so-called 'lonely late nights' in the study. I had security logs altered to show you spending hours alone with your little maid. And then..." She gestured mockingly to Maya. "I made sure the private dining room door was unlocked, and that my personal photographer was stationed in the service corridor with a clear view through the glass."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. It was a setup. Every piece of it.

"Why?" Adrien’s voice was dangerously quiet. "Why manufacture a scandal with a member of my household staff?"

"Because of the prenuptial clause 4-B, you fool!" Vanessa laughed, her mask of elegance completely shattering to reveal the cold, greedy strategist underneath. "If you break off the engagement due to public moral turpitude—say, a very public, scandalous affair with an employee on the night of the gala—the breach penalty triggers immediately. Whitmore Holdings forfeits forty percent of its voting stock to Sinclair International as liquidated damages."

Richard Sinclair smiled triumphantly. "By midnight, Adrien, you won't just be married to my daughter. Or, if you refuse, you'll be a pauper stripped of your company. Either way, Sinclair International owns the crown jewels."

They thought they had won. They thought they had checkmated the great Adrien Whitmore.

They had no idea what Adrien had discovered three hours ago.
