Chapter 1 - THE DANDELION ON THE LEDGERJulian didn’t move the dirt. He didn’t wipe away the crushed yellow petals. For the first time in two years, the cold armor around his ribs cracked just a millimeter. When Emma rushed out of the room, mortified and dragging Nora behind her, Julian reached down, picked up the ruined dandelion, and placed it inside the desk drawer next to the crayon drawing.

That night, sleep refused to come. Julian sat in his leather chair, the glow of the desk lamp cutting sharp shadows across the mahogany. He pulled open the drawer. The crayon drawing—the tall figure with impossibly long arms standing beside the small girl and the triangle-dressed woman—stared back at him.

“Mr. Julian can stand with us.”

Julian closed his eyes, his chest tightening. The grief was a physical weight, crushing him from the inside out. But alongside the crushing emptiness, a strange, terrifying warmth began to bleed through.

Down the hall in the service quarters, Emma couldn't sleep either. She sat on the edge of her narrow cot, listening to Nora's soft breathing.

“We can't stay here, baby,” Emma whispered into the dark, stroking her daughter's blonde curls. “He’s too haunted. We’re getting too close.”

She had no idea how right she was. Because locked away in Julian's private wall safe, hidden behind a framed portrait of his late wife Olivia, was a dossier that would detonate the quiet peace of the Mercer estate—a dossier that contained a secret about Olivia’s final moments, a falsified death certificate, and a name that Emma Reed had desperately tried to bury five years ago.
