Chapter 5 - THE CRUEL LIE UNMASKEDEmma’s breath hitched. The blood drained from her face until she looked like a corpse standing in the moonlight. She looked down at Nora, who was watching them with wide, frightened eyes from the doorway, and then back up at Julian.

The wall had broken. The lie could no longer hold.
“She didn't want to die, Julian,” Emma whispered, the name slipping out of her mouth before she could stop it—the way she used to say it in the quiet mornings before the corporate empire consumed him.
Julian flinched as if he had been struck. Hearing his first name on her lips—the exact tone, the exact cadence—shattered the last remaining doubt in his mind.
“Olivia?” Julian breathed, his hands trembling as he reached out to touch her cheek.
“No,” Emma stepped back, dodging his touch. Her face hardened with a fierce, protective maternal instinct. “Not Olivia. Not the man you became, anyway. Olivia died the day you signed away your soul to Mercer Global, the day you chose a board room over your family, the day your father’s ruthless ambition swallowed the man I fell in love with.”
“What are you talking about?” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with agony. “You died! I mourned you! I buried you!”
“You buried an empty casket!” Emma yelled back, tears streaming freely. “Do you think I didn't know about the threats? Do you think I didn't know why your father’s enemies were circling our house? Your father didn't just build an empire, Julian—he built it on bodies, blackmail, and blood. When I found the financial ledgers in his office proving he was going to frame you for corporate espionage to take you down, I tried to leave.”
Julian stared at her, utterly paralyzed.
“I was pregnant,” Emma continued, her voice trembling. “I was eight months along with Sophie. Your father cornered me. He told me that if I left with you, or if I exposed him, he would ensure my child was never born. He staged the accident on that bridge, Julian. He meant to kill me and my unborn baby to protect his legacy.”

Julian staggered backward, colliding with the porch railing. “My father… my father died of a heart attack a week before the crash.”
“It wasn't a heart attack,” Emma said quietly, the final blow dropping like an anvil. “He found out I survived the river. He confessed to me in his hospital room hours before he flatlined. And he told me something else, Julian… something that will destroy you even more than his crimes.”
