Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFRONTATIONMidnight at the Mercer estate was a graveyard of silence. The twelve acres of Greenwich property were shrouded in a thick, creeping fog that swallowed the moonlight.

In the staff cottage, Emma packed a single duffel bag. Her hands didn't stop shaking. She threw in a few onesies for Nora, a handful of cash she had hidden beneath the floorboards, and her passport—the real one, bearing a name she thought she had buried forever.

“Mommy, where are we going?” Nora whispered sleepily from the cot, clutching her one-eared rabbit.

“Shh, sweet girl,” Emma choked out, blinking back hot tears. “We’re going on an adventure. Just like we practiced.”

She zipped the bag, hoisted it over her shoulder, and opened the cottage door.

She didn't even make it off the porch.

Standing at the bottom of the wooden steps, illuminated by the pale glow of a security light, was Julian Mercer. He wore a dark wool coat, his hands buried deep in his pockets, his face carved from stone.

“Going somewhere, Emma?” Julian’s voice cut through the night air like a razor.

Emma froze, one hand gripping the doorframe so hard her knuckles turned white. “Mr. Mercer. I… I was just resigning. I’ll leave the keys on the counter. Please, just let us go.”

“Resigning?” Julian took a slow step up the stairs, closing the distance between them. “You don't get to resign, Emma. Not when you’ve been living in my guest house under a false name. Not when you hold the answers to the single question that has been tearing me apart for six hundred and ninety-four days.”

“I don't know what you're talking about!” Emma cried, tears finally spilling over her cheeks.

“Don’t you?” Julian reached out, his long fingers gripping the edge of the doorframe inches from her face. His eyes were wild, desperate, and furious all at once. “My wife died in that crash. Or so they told me. They handed me a closed casket, a DNA report that matched dental records, and a grieving family that didn't ask questions. But they never showed me the body, Emma. The police report said there was a second survivor pulled from the river. A woman who vanished from the hospital bed before dawn.”

Julian leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

“That woman was you. So tell me, Emma… why did my wife fake her own death? And why is her daughter sleeping inside your cottage?”
