Chapter 2 - THE FROZEN EMPIRE AND THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF VANCE

Chaos erupted inside the Grand Meridian Ballroom faster than a wildfire consuming dry timber. Phones blared simultaneously, creating a jarring, discordant symphony of digital doom for the upper crust of New York society. Tycoons who had spent decades looking down their noses at self-made entrepreneurs now stared at their glowing screens in sheer, unadulterated horror.
Victoria Vance’s phone slipped from her trembling, manicured fingers, clattering uselessly against the polished marble floor. Her knuckles turned ghostly white as she grabbed the lapel of a nearby executive friend, only for him to violently bat her hand away, desperate to distance himself from a sinking ship.
"What... what is this?" Victoria choked out, her voice losing its haughty resonance, replaced by a raw, guttural panic. She lunged forward, grabbing Katherine’s burgundy sleeve. "What did you do? You psychotic bitch, my family built this city! You can't just—"
"I didn't just buy your assets, Victoria," Katherine replied smoothly, her expression as unreadable as a slab of granite. She gently brushed Victoria’s hand off her jacket sleeve as if flicking away a piece of lint. "I bought your future. I bought your past. As of three minutes ago, the deed to your ancestral estate, your penthouse in Manhattan, your private jet, and your offshore accounts belong entirely to Sterling Capital. You are, legally speaking, a homeless trespasser."
The silence in the ballroom was absolute. Even the string quartet had stopped playing, paralyzed by the sheer tectonic shift in wealth unfolding before their eyes.
Chloe stood up beside her mother, wiping away her tears. The fear in her eyes was gone, replaced by a quiet, fierce awe as she watched the mighty Lady Vance crumble into a pathetic, weeping mess.
"Security," Katherine called out, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. Two massive, suited private security guards materialized out of nowhere, standing at attention behind Katherine. "Escort this trespassing vagrant off the premises. She no longer meets the net-worth requirement for this venue."
"You can't do this to me!" Victoria shrieked, her mascara running down her pale cheeks in ugly black streaks. Her pride, her arrogance, her entire identity vanished into thin air as the guards grabbed her expensive silk-and-velvet arms. "Do you know who I am?! I am a Vance!"
"And I am the one who owns your name," Katherine whispered as Victoria was dragged backward toward the grand exit, kicking and screaming like a deranged toddler. The elite guests parted like the Red Sea, too terrified to even look Victoria in the eye as she passed.
As the heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind the disgraced socialite, Katherine turned to the pale, sweat-beaded CEO standing closest to her. He was trembling so hard his champagne flute was clinking violently against his ring.
"A pleasant evening, isn't it?" Katherine smiled faintly, a terrifying sight. "Make sure your company's compliance audits are in order tomorrow morning. I'd hate for you to experience a similar... structural failure."

The CEO swallowed hard, nodding rapidly without uttering a single word. Katherine turned on her heel, pulling Chloe close, and walked out of the ballroom, leaving a trail of absolute wreckage in her wake. But this was only the beginning. Katherine knew that desperate people do desperate things, and Victoria Vance was not going down without a war.
HOOK: Stripped of her wealth and banished from society, Victoria retreats to her empty, mortgaged-out mansion—only to find that Katherine’s revenge has only just begun. Who is waiting for her in the dark?
