Chapter 4 - THE BITTER TASTE OF RETRIBUTION AND THE GHOST FROM THE PAST

The metallic tang of fear coated Victoria’s tongue as she stared at the steaming cup of espresso resting on the mahogany table. The room felt suffocatingly small, the air thick with the scent of roasted coffee beans and impending doom.

"I won't drink it," Victoria spat, crossing her arms tightly to hide her violent shaking. "You can't force me. This is kidnapping! This is assault!"

The man in the charcoal suit let out a low, humorless chuckle. He picked up the porcelain cup, its surface reflecting the flickering emergency light from the hallway, and stepped closer. The aura of absolute authority he projected made it clear he was no ordinary henchman; he moved with the lethal grace of an elite fixer.

"Assault?" The man raised an eyebrow, tilting his head. "Victoria, an hour ago, you violently shoved a traumatized teenage girl into a jagged glass display just to feed your own pathetic ego. You destroyed her physical well-being without a second thought. And now you’re crying about assault because someone offered you a cup of coffee?"

"She's a nobody!" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. "A nobody from the slums! People like that don't belong in our world!"

In a flash of movement so fast it defied human reaction, the man grabbed Victoria by the jaw, his fingers pressing into her cheekbones with bone-crushing force. With surgical precision, he tilted her head back and brought the rim of the cup to her lips.

"A nobody?" the man whispered fiercely, his eyes flashing with a dark, personal hatred. "Let me educate you on who Chloe really is, and why Katherine Sterling is hunting your entire bloodline down to the last root."

Victoria choked, the scalding heat of the espresso burning her lower lip as a few drops spilled onto her tongue. The taste was intensely bitter, laced with a strange, metallic aftertaste that made her stomach churn.

"Twenty years ago," the man continued, his voice dropping to a low, chilling register, "there was another woman who stood in this very ballroom. A brilliant, rising architect with a young daughter. Her name was Elena Vance. Ring a bell?"

Victoria’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her looking like a corpse.

"Your late husband," the man hissed, "stole her patents, framed her for corporate espionage, and drove her husband to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge. And when Elena tried to seek justice in court? Your family bought the judge, ruined her financially, and left her to die in a gutter. But she didn't die. She changed her name, rebuilt her empire from the ashes, and swore an oath of blood. Elena Vance... is Katherine Sterling."

Victoria let out a blood-curdling scream of pure horror. The cup slipped from the man’s hand, shattering on the hardwood floor, dark liquid splattering across her ruined sapphire gown like fresh blood.

"No... no, that's impossible! Elena died years ago!" Victoria sobbed, collapsing onto her knees in the puddle of coffee and broken porcelain.

"People like you always think the ghosts you bury stay dead," the man said, stepping over her crumpled form and walking toward the door. "Drink up, Victoria. The nightmare has only just begun."

HOOK: The revelation that Katherine Sterling is actually Elena Vance shatters Victoria’s entire reality. But if Victoria’s family destroyed Elena twenty years ago, what devastating trap has Katherine spent two decades setting up?
