Chapter 3 - THE EMPTY MANSION AND THE MIDNIGHT VISITOR

The rain poured relentlessly over the sprawling iron gates of the Vance estate, washing away the remnants of grandeur from a family that had ruled the city for a century. Victoria stumbled out of a cheap taxi, her sapphire gown soaked through, sticking uncomfortably to her shivering frame. Her designer heels were ruined, her hair was a bird's nest, and her mind was fracturing under the weight of total, irreversible catastrophe.

She punched the keypad at the front security gate, expecting the familiar, welcoming green light.

ACCESS DENIED. PROPERTY UNDER SEIZURE.

"No, no, no! Let me in!" Victoria screamed at the automated camera, slamming her fists against the cold steel bars until her knuckles bled. "This is my home! I live here!"

CLICK.

The heavy iron gates slowly swung inward, not because of her passcode, but because a remote command from Sterling Capital had unlocked them for the new owner. Trembling with a mix of fury and terror, Victoria staggered up the grand stone steps and pushed open the massive oak front doors.

The house was dead silent. The smart-home system was deactivated; the chandeliers were dark, casting long, menacing shadows across the cavernous foyer. There were no servants, no glowing hearths, no warmth. Just the hollow echo of her own frantic footsteps.

"Hello?" Victoria called out, her voice cracking. "Is anyone here?"

"I am."

Victoria jumped violently, spinning around. Sitting casually in the high-backed velvet armchair by the unlit fireplace was a man she had never seen before. He wore an immaculate charcoal-grey bespoke suit, and in his hand, he held a porcelain cup, lazily stirring a dark, steaming liquid. The rich, bitter aroma of freshly brewed espresso filled the damp air.

"Who the hell are you?" Victoria demanded, backing away toward the heavy front doors. "Get out of my house! I'll call the police!"

"The police won't help you here, Lady Vance," the man said smoothly, his voice deep and hypnotic. He took a slow sip of his espresso. "In fact, the local precinct commissioner is currently reviewing an eviction notice signed by Katherine Sterling herself. As for this house—it’s mine now. Or rather, Katherine’s. She let me borrow it for the evening."

Victoria’s chest heaved. "What does she want from me? I lost everything! My accounts are frozen, my stocks are worthless, our family name is a laughingstock! What more could that monster possibly want?"

The man stood up slowly, stepping out of the shadows. The dim moonlight cutting through the tall Palladian windows illuminated his face—and the terrifying, cold smile playing on his lips.

"She wants you to understand what it feels like to be completely powerless," the man said, taking a step closer. "To have everything you love ripped away in a single second. But more than that... she wants you to drink."

He gestured to the small mahogany table beside the armchair. Resting on it was a single, steaming cup of dark espresso.

"What is that?" Victoria whispered, her eyes locked on the cup.

"Just a little parting gift from Katherine," the man replied softly. "Consider it the cherry on top of your completely ruined, bankrupt life. Drink it, Victoria. It’s the last luxury you’ll ever taste."
