Chapter 1 - The Six-Month Pact

The words hung in the freezing air of the cramped apartment like shards of glass. Will you take my daughter?
Marcus Callahan, a man who moved billions with a single signature, felt the foundation of his structured world crumble. He looked at Amanda, whose hollow cheeks and desperate eyes told a story of brutal, unyielding agony. Then he looked down at Lily. She was staring at him with a heartbreaking mixture of terror and hope, her tiny fingers still clutching the lapels of his oversized, snow-drenched cashmere coat.
"Amanda," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "You’re asking me to step into a life I buried five years ago."
"I’m asking you because you’re the only man with the power to protect her from what’s coming," Amanda gasped, coughing violently into a tissue that she quickly hid. But Marcus caught the flash of dark crimson. Time wasn't just running out; it was practically gone.
"What do you mean, what's coming?" Marcus asked, his sharp corporate instincts instantly catching the underlying dread in her voice. "Is there someone else?"
Before Amanda could answer, a heavy, thunderous bang shook the apartment door. Lily jumped, letting out a small whimper and sprinting to hide behind Marcus’s legs. Instinctively, Marcus stood up, his broad shoulders shielding both the mother and the child.
"Amanda! Open the damn door! I know the brat is back!" a harsh, slurred male voice roared from the hallway, followed by the aggressive rattling of the doorknob.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed. "Who is that?"
Amanda’s face turned translucent with fear. "My brother-in-law, Richard. My late husband’s brother. He found out about the life insurance policy I set up for Lily. He’s been tracking us. If I die and she goes into the system, he’s going to petition for custody just to get the money and use her as a lottery ticket."
The door groaned as Richard threw his weight against it. Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled out his encrypted phone, dialed a speed-select number, and spoke with terrifying calmness. "Victor. I’m at 442 Elm Street, Apartment 3C. Bring the SUV. Bring three security units. Now."
Turning back to the trembling woman and child, Marcus knelt. He grabbed Lily’s small hands. "Lily, do you trust your mom?"
She nodded rapidly, tears finally spilling over her flushed cheeks.
"Then trust me." Marcus stood up, walked to the door just as Richard shattered the top wooden panel, and swung it open himself.
Standing in the hallway was a burly, disheveled man reeking of cheap whiskey and sweat. Richard blinked in surprise at the towering, impeccably dressed billionaire standing in front of him. "Who the hell are you? Get out of my way, I'm here for my niece."
"I am Marcus Callahan," Marcus said, his voice dripping with absolute malice. "And if you ever breathe the same air as this child again, I will buy the prison you rot in."
Before Richard could swing, two of Marcus’s elite security guards, having sprinted up the stairs, tackled Richard to the ground, pinning him into the snowy hallway floor.

Marcus didn't look back. He turned to Amanda. "Pack what you can carry. You are both coming with me. We are going to my estate, and we are hiring the best oncologists in the world. I am accepting your deal, Amanda. But we do this my way."
As they drove through the raging blizzard in the armored vehicle, Lily fell asleep with her head in Marcus’s lap. For the first time since his wife Sarah had passed away, Marcus felt a strange, protective warmth in his chest. But as he stared out into the white noise of the city, he couldn't shake the feeling that Amanda hadn't told him the full story. Why him? Out of all the billionaires in New York, why had she targeted his schedule so perfectly?
