Chapter 5 - The Final Breath

The silence that followed Julian’s departure was suffocating. The only sound was the erratic, weakening beep... beep... beep... of Amanda’s monitor.
"Marcus..." Amanda whispered, her voice cracking.
Marcus rushed to her side, kneeling next to Lily. "I’m here, Amanda. I’m right here."
"He’s right... he can destroy you..." she gasped, tears streaming down her pale face. "Take Lily... run away. Leave the country. Don't fight them..."
"No," Marcus said firmly, grasping both Amanda’s and Lily’s hands together. "Five years ago, when Sarah died, I gave up on life. I buried myself in work, in money, in glass buildings. I let the world pass me by because I was too afraid to care about anyone again. But when this little girl sat on my steps in the middle of a blizzard, she brought me back to life. I am not running, Amanda. I am going to finish this."
Amanda looked at him, a profound sense of peace washing over her dying eyes. She looked at her daughter. "Lily... my beautiful girl. Look at Marcus. He is your papa now. You listen to him. You be brave."
"Mama, please don't leave," Lily sobbed, burying her face into Amanda’s chest. "Please stay."
"I will always be in your heart, my sweet angel..." Amanda whispered. Her eyes drifted to Marcus one last time. "Thank you... Marcus."
The monitor let out a long, continuous tone.
The line went flat.
Lily’s heartbreaking screams filled the room. Marcus pulled the weeping child into his arms, holding her tightly as the tears finally broke through his own stoic exterior, streaming down his face. He let her cry until her small body went limp with exhaustion and she fell into a deep sleep of pure grief.
Marcus gently laid her down on the hospital sofa, covering her with his coat. He stood up, wiping the tears from his face. The grief in his heart instantly hardened into an indestructible diamond of pure vengeance.
He unclasped the silver locket from Lily’s neck. He looked at it closely, noticing a microscopic USB node hidden within the intricate engravings of the clasp.
He pulled out his phone and called Victor. "Victor. Gather the entire board of directors. Call an emergency press conference at the Callahan Headquarters for 8:30 AM tomorrow. Invite every major news outlet in the country."

"Sir? What are you planning to do?"
"I’m going to go to war," Marcus said coldly. "And I’m going to burn Julian Vance’s empire to the ground."
