Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Past

Three weeks later, the Callahan Estate—a sprawling, highly secured fortress in upstate New York—was transformed. One entire wing had been converted into a state-of-the-art medical suite for Amanda, staffed by top-tier private doctors. Lily had been enrolled in an elite private academy, and Marcus found himself doing something he hadn't done in a decade: coming home before 5:00 PM.

He walked into the sunlit drawing-room to find Lily trying to teach his massive, normally aggressive German Shepherd, Zeus, how to sit for a dog treat. To Marcus’s shock, the beast was rolled over on its back, panting happily as Lily giggled.

"He likes you," Marcus said, leaning against the doorframe with a rare smile.

"He was lonely, just like us," Lily said innocently, looking up. "Mr. Marcus, is Mama going to get better? The doctors use a lot of big words."

Marcus walked over and knelt beside her. He hated lying, especially to children. "The doctors are doing everything they can, Lily. But no matter what happens, I promised your mom that you will always have a home here. With me."

Lily threw her small arms around his neck. The sudden embrace caught him off guard, but he wrapped his arms around her tightly.

Later that evening, Marcus visited Amanda in her medical suite. The treatment was aggressive, but it was clear she was fading. Her breathing was assisted by oxygen, and her hands shook violently.

"She loves it here, Marcus. Thank you," Amanda whispered, her voice barely audible. "You are giving her a chance."

"I need honesty, Amanda," Marcus said gently but firmly, sitting in the chair beside her bed. "My legal team is drawing up the adoption papers, but they ran a background check on your late husband, David Foster. Something doesn't add up. He died four years ago in a hit-and-run accident. The case file was completely sealed by the FBI. Why would a standard accountant’s death be sealed by federal authorities?"

Amanda’s monitor spiked, her heart rate accelerating. She closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I wanted to protect you from it. If you know, you become a target too."

"Amanda, I am already a target. Look at my net worth," Marcus urged. "Tell me."

"David didn't work for a normal accounting firm. He was an undercover forensic accountant for the Department of Justice," Amanda confessed, her voice trembling. "He uncovered a massive money-laundering syndicate operating within the highest echelons of Wall Street. A group called 'The Orion Network.' They found out. They staged the accident."

Marcus’s blood ran cold. The Orion Network. It was a shadow organization his own board of directors had warned him about—a ruthless conglomerate trying to hostilely take over Callahan Industries for the past fiscal year.

"Before David died, he hid the master ledger—the encrypted drive containing the names of every corrupt CEO and politician involved," Amanda whispered, clutching Marcus’s hand. "He told me that if anything happened to him, I had to keep Lily safe. Marcus... the drive isn't hidden in a bank vault or a safe-deposit box."

"Where is it?"

Amanda looked toward the window, where Lily was playing in the snow outside with a nanny. "David embedded the encryption key into the DNA code of a custom-made piece of jewelry. A silver locket he gave to Lily on the day she was born. She wears it every single day. The Orion Network has finally figured it out. That’s why Richard was hunting us. He isn't working alone. He was paid by them to get that locket."

Just as the realization washed over Marcus, the emergency alarms of the estate began to blare. The lights flickered and plunged into pitch blackness.

Over the intercom, Victor’s panicked voice cut through the static: "Sir! Perimeter breach at the south gate! They cut the main power lines and jammed our comms! They're inside the house!"
