Chapter 3 - The Midnight Raid

Marcus acted on pure adrenaline. He slammed the manual lock on Amanda’s medical suite door, ensuring it was bulletproof and sealed from the inside. "Stay here. Do not open this door for anyone but me," he commanded.
He drew a concealed firearm from his waistband—a relic of his early military days before he built his corporate empire—and sprinted down the darkened, echoing hallways of the mansion. His only thought was Lily.
Glass shattered downstairs. Shouts echoed through the grand foyer. Marcus slipped through the shadows like a ghost, reaching the playroom just as a masked man in tactical gear grabbed Lily by her jacket, ripping her away from her nanny, who lay unconscious on the floor.
"Let me go! Mr. Marcus! Help!" Lily screamed, kicking wildly.
The intruder reached for the silver locket around her neck, his gloved fingers straining to snap the chain.
"Step away from the girl," Marcus’s voice boomed, deadpan and lethal.
The intruder spun, raising a silenced pistol, but Marcus was faster. Two precise shots echoed through the room. The intruder collapsed to the floor, groaning in agony as the weapon flew from his hand. Marcus sprinted forward, pulling Lily into his chest and pinning her behind a heavy oak desk just as three more armed men burst through the double doors, unleashing a hail of gunfire.
Wood splinters flew through the air. Marcus fired back, taking down another operative, but they were pinned down. He could hear the heavy thud of tactical boots closing in on their position.
Suddenly, a ferocious roar echoed through the room. Zeus, the German Shepherd, leaped over the couch, sinking his teeth into the lead attacker's arm. The man shrieked, firing wildly into the ceiling as the dog dragged him to the ground.
Using the distraction, Marcus grabbed Lily, slipped through the hidden service door behind the bookshelf, and ran down the narrow, dark passage that led to the underground garage. He could hear the chaos echoing above them as his security team engaged the rest of the extraction team.
They reached his armored SUV. He strapped Lily into the backseat, his hands shaking slightly. "Lily, look at me. Are you hurt?"
She shook her head, terrified but remarkably quiet, clutching the locket tightly against her chest. "They wanted my necklace. Daddy’s necklace."
"I know, sweetheart. And I’m going to protect it. I promise," Marcus said, slamming the door. He jumped into the driver’s seat, revved the massive V8 engine, and smashed through the garage doors, roaring out into the snowy night just as local police sirens began to wail in the distance.
He dialed Victor on the car’s secure satellite phone. "Victor! Status on Amanda!"

There was a tense, agonizing pause on the other end. "Sir... the medical suite held. She’s physically safe. But the stress... her heart failed. The doctors are trying to stabilize her, but Marcus... she’s slipping away. She has hours left. You need to get back to the hospital downtown where they're transferring her."
Marcus gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. He looked in the rearview mirror at Lily, who was looking out the window at the falling snow. How could he tell this innocent child that her mother was dying, while a shadow syndicate was actively hunting her down?
