Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master Unmasked

By 4:00 AM, the private wing of Manhattan General Hospital was locked down under heavy guard. Amanda lay beneath a white sheet, her breathing shallow, her eyes half-closed. The machines around her beeped in a slow, agonizing rhythm.

Lily sat on the edge of the bed, holding her mother’s cold hand, singing a soft lullaby Amanda used to sing to her. Marcus stood by the window, staring out at the city skyline, his mind racing. The encryption key was in the locket. If The Orion Network got their hands on it, they would control the city’s financial infrastructure—and destroy Callahan Industries in the process.

The door softly clicked open. Marcus turned, expecting Victor. Instead, a tall, elegantly dressed man with silver hair walked in, flanked by two lawyers.

Marcus’s jaw tightened. It was Julian Vance, the majority shareholder of Callahan Industries and his longtime mentor.

"Julian," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave. "What are you doing here at this hour?"

"I heard about the attack on your estate, Marcus. I came as soon as I could," Julian said, his voice dripping with faux sympathy. He walked toward the bed, his eyes instantly locking onto the silver locket resting on Lily’s chest. "It’s a tragedy about Amanda. She was a spectacular assistant when she worked for us. But Marcus... you cannot let your emotions blind you. Taking in this child, dragging her into corporate affairs... it’s a liability for the firm."

Marcus watched Julian’s eyes. He noticed the slight, predatory twitch in the older man's jaw when Lily moved the locket out of sight.

Suddenly, the pieces fell into place.

How did the intruders bypass the estate's multi-million dollar security grid? Who had the clearance codes? Who had been pushing for the hostile takeover of Callahan Industries from the inside?

"It was you," Marcus whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow.

Julian paused, a cold smile slowly spreading across his sophisticated face. He signaled his lawyers, who stepped outside and pulled the door shut, locking it from the outside.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Marcus," Julian said, his tone shifting from sympathetic to chillingly ruthless. "David Foster was a fool. He thought he could bring down a billion-dollar network with a single flash drive. And Amanda was a fool for thinking she could run from us."

"You killed David," Marcus said, stepping forward, his frame imposing and dangerous.

"David was an unfortunate casualty of progress," Julian shrugged carelessly. "And now, Amanda is dying naturally, saving us the trouble. All I need is that locket, Marcus. Give it to me, and I will let you keep your company. Refuse, and I will have my associates file emergency custody paperwork through the corrupt judges on my payroll. By noon tomorrow, Lily will be in state custody, and you will be arrested for kidnapping and corporate espionage. I’ve already framed the paper trail."

Amanda’s heart monitor began to beep frantically. She opened her eyes, looking at Julian with sheer terror. "No... please..."

Lily whimpered, pulling closer to her mother.

Marcus stood between Julian and the bed, his eyes blazing with absolute fury. "You think you’ve won, Julian? You think you can threaten my family?"

"Family?" Julian laughed mockingly. "She’s a dead girl's brat, Marcus! You’ve known her for three weeks! Don't ruin your life for a broken promise."

"Get out," Marcus said, his voice deadly quiet.

"Clock's ticking, Marcus. You have until 9:00 AM tomorrow morning to deliver the locket to my office. If you don't... you lose everything." Julian turned on his heel and walked out, his laughter echoing down the sterile hospital corridor.
