Chapter 1 - The Breach of Protocol

The silence in the marble foyer was absolute, save for the rhythmic, metallic clack-clack of Ethan’s purple crutches against the hardwood. Alexander felt as though he had walked into a foreign country—one where he was the only stranger.

"I didn't expect you back until Friday, Mr. Hayes," Sophia said, her voice devoid of the subservience he usually expected from his staff.
Alexander looked at the cleaning cloth in his son's hand. "What," he began, his voice raspy from disuse, "is happening here?"
Sophia didn't blink. "We are finishing a task, sir. Ethan wanted to help. He’s been working on his core strength. It’s part of his recovery."
"His recovery?" Alexander snapped, stepping forward, his shadow engulfing the room. "The best specialists in the world told me he needs rest and clinical supervision. You are a housekeeper, Sophia. Not a physical therapist."

"The specialists look at his legs, Mr. Hayes," Sophia replied, her voice dropping into a dangerous, soft tone. "I’m the only one looking at his spirit."
The air crackled. For the first time in years, Alexander Hayes wasn't a CEO. He was a father being told he was failing, and the sting was sharper than any stock market crash.
