Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

That night, Alexander did not sleep. He sat in his library, surrounded by leather-bound books he hadn't opened since Amelia died. He watched the security feeds.

He saw Sophia in the kitchen, not working, but sitting on the floor with Ethan, playing a game that required him to shift his weight. He saw her teaching him to stand for ten seconds without the crutches. It was dangerous. It was unauthorized. And it was the most progress he had seen in three years.

But Alexander was a man of control. He couldn't handle the idea that a stranger had unlocked the door to his son’s potential that he had spent millions to keep bolted.

He called his head of security, Marcus. "Run a background check on Sophia Ramirez. Deep. Every address, every job, every connection. By morning."

He told himself it was about safety. But in the dark of the library, he knew it was about jealousy. He was the one who paid for the mansion. He was the one who built the empire. Why did his son look at her like she was the sun, and at him like he was a ghost?

By 4:00 AM, the file arrived. Sophia Ramirez wasn't just a housekeeper. She was the daughter of a disgraced doctor whose license had been stripped years ago—the very doctor who had been one of the first to challenge Alexander’s corporate-funded medical research.

The connection was too coincidental. Alexander felt a cold rage settle in his gut. Is this a setup? he wondered. Is she here to destroy me?
