Chapter 3 - SECRETS IN THE SCARS 🖤

Ethan’s hands shook so violently the paper rattled. Emily? It was impossible. Emily had died in a horrific car crash six years ago. They had never had children. They had tried, desperately, but the doctors told them it was impossible before the tragedy took her away.
How could two five-year-old girls under a bridge carry his dead wife’s DNA?
"Ethan? What is it?" Maria asked, walking out of the kitchen with a cup of tea. She saw the ghost-white expression on his face and immediately set the cup down.
"Maria... look at this," Ethan whispered, handing her the papers.
As Maria read the document, her hands flew to her mouth. "Dear God... Emily? But how? She passed away six years ago. The math... the twins are five years old. Ethan, that means they were born a year after Emily died!"
The room felt suffocatingly small. The mystery was a labyrinth of shadows, and Ethan realized that the encounter under the bridge was no random act of fate. Someone had placed them there. Someone wanted him to find them—or someone was hiding them from him.
The next morning, the television in the apartment blared with breaking news.
"Billionaire CEO Ethan Carter has been removed from Carter Industries due to a sudden mental breakdown," the anchor announced, showing a heavily edited photo of Ethan looking disheveled outside the bridge. "Sources claim the former tycoon has suffered a psychotic break linked to the anniversary of his wife's death and is currently harboring two unidentified children. Law enforcement is investigating."
Margaret was playing dirty. She wasn't just stripping his wealth; she was destroying his sanity in the eyes of the public so he could never fight back.
Ignoring the news, Ethan used a burner phone to contact Marcus Vance, a rogue private investigator and the estranged brother of his mother’s corrupt attorney. Marcus owed Ethan his life from a past corporate scandal.
Two hours later, Marcus met Ethan in a dim diner on the outskirts of the city.
"You're radioactive right now, Carter," Marcus said, sliding a thick folder across the sticky table. "Your mother has put a bounty on any information regarding your whereabouts. But I found what you asked for. The woman who left those girls under the bridge."
"Is she their mother?" Ethan asked, his voice raw.
"She was their surrogate," Marcus corrected, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Her name was Sarah Jenkins. I found her apartment. Or rather, what was left of it. She was found dead two days ago. The police ruled it an accidental overdose, but the apartment was wiped clean. Professional job."
Ethan’s blood ran cold. "And the note? The note pinned to the cardboard?"

"Sarah didn't write it," Marcus said, leaning in. "I ran the handwriting against Sarah's public records. It doesn't match. But I did find a bank transfer into Sarah's account from five years ago. A massive sum of money, paid out from a medical facility in Switzerland. A facility specializing in illegal, off-the-books reproductive technology."
💥 THE HOOK: Marcus tapped a photo in the file. It was a picture of the Swiss clinic's founding board of directors. Standing right in the center, smiling coldly beside a world-renowned geneticist, was Margaret Carter.
