Chapter 4 - THE PUPPET MASTER’S SHADOW 🕸️

The pieces of the horrific puzzle were beginning to fall into place. Margaret hadn't just discovered the twins—she had created them.
Six years ago, when Emily was hospitalized after the car crash, she hadn't died instantly. She had been kept on life support for days before Margaret told Ethan there was no hope and convinced him to sign the papers to let her go. During those days, Margaret had secretly harvested Emily's eggs, using Ethan’s previously stored samples from their fertility clinic visits, and created embryos. She had used a hidden surrogate to bring the children into the world, keeping them as a secret insurance policy—or a weapon to use against Ethan when the time was right.
But something had gone wrong. The surrogate, Sarah, must have grown a conscience, realized what Margaret intended to do with the children, and fled with the twins. She had lived in hiding for five years until Margaret’s clean-up crew finally tracked her down. Realizing her time was running out, Sarah had staged the abandonment under the bridge, knowing Ethan’s daily commute route, gambling everything that the father's instinct would kick in before Margaret's thugs got to them.
Ethan returned to the small apartment, his heart burning with a mixture of profound love and blinding rage. He looked at Sophie and Lily, who were currently laughing as Maria helped them bake cookies. They were his. They were Emily’s. They were the living, breathing pieces of the love he thought he had lost forever.
"Daddy?"
Ethan froze. He looked down. Sophie was standing right in front of him, holding a misshapen, flour-covered cookie. She had never called him that before.
Tears pricked Ethan's eyes. He knelt down, taking the cookie, and pulled both girls into a tight, desperate embrace. "Yes, baby. I'm here. I'm never leaving you."
Suddenly, the front door splintered open with a deafening crash.
Four heavily armed men in black tactical gear stormed the apartment. Behind them stepped Richard Vance, holding a legal document, flanked by three agents from Child Protective Services.
"Ethan Carter," Richard said, a smug smile stretching across his face. "By order of the state, these children are being removed from your custody due to allegations of child endangerment, kidnapping, and your documented mental instability. Hand them over."
Sophie and Lily screamed, clinging to Ethan’s neck like frightened koalas. Maria tried to block the guards, but she was brutally shoved aside.

"Touch them and I will kill you," Ethan roared, his billionaire restraint evaporating into raw, paternal fury. He stood up, ready to fight all four men with his bare hands.
💥 THE HOOK: One of the tactical guards drew a taser, aiming it directly at Ethan’s chest. But before he could fire, Lily stood in front of her father, holding up a small, rusted silver locket she had kept hidden in her dirty dress pocket. Inside the locket was a microchip—and a voice recording that began to play loudly, echoing through the room. It was Margaret Carter's voice, discussing the termination of the surrogate and the disposal of the "clerical errors."
