Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS IN THE SILK

Hook: A hidden compartment in a wedding dress holds a secret heavier than a casket.

Three days after the disastrous wedding, the Sterling mansion remained under a dark cloud. The media was having a field day; headlines like "The Black Widow of Wall Street" and "The Poisoned Flute" dominated every news outlet. Julian had barricaded himself in his study, refusing to speak to the press or his board of directors.

The door knocked softly. It was Elena. She was no longer wearing her maid's apron, but a simple sweater. The bruise on her cheek had turned a faint yellow.

"Sir," Elena said quietly, holding a heavy garment bag. "The police cleared the bridal suite, but they missed this. It was sewn into the inner lining of Victoria’s wedding gown."

Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot. He took the bag, unzipped it, and pulled out the elegant, stained white lace dress. Following Elena's gesture, he ripped open a hidden, double-stitched pocket near the corset. Inside was a small, encrypted USB drive and a handwritten ledger.

Julian opened the ledger. As he flipped through the pages, his blood ran cold. It wasn't a diary; it was a financial logbook tracking massive, anonymous wire transfers into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. But what made his breath catch was the list of names. It wasn't just Victoria’s personal accounts—several of the transactions were signed off by Julian’s own Chief Financial Officer and long-time friend, Arthur Pendelton.

"This can't be," Julian muttered, his hands shaking. "Arthur has been with my family for twenty years."

"There is more, Mr. Sterling," Elena said, stepping closer. "Before the wedding, I overheard Victoria on the phone. She wasn't just trying to kill you for your inheritance. She was rushing the timeline because someone was blackmailing her. Someone who knew about her first husband."

Julian’s head snapped up. "Her first husband died of a sudden heart attack in London. The medical report was clear."

"The ledger says otherwise," Elena pointed out, her finger tracing a line dated exactly three weeks before the London tragedy. It was a payment to a prominent toxicologist for a rare, undetectable cardiovascular paralytic.

Suddenly, the lights in the study flickered and died. The mansion was plunged into total darkness.

From the hallway, the heavy sound of footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor. Julian reached into his desk drawer for his firearm, but his fingers met empty space. The gun was gone.

"Looking for this, Julian?" a voice called out from the shadows of the doorway.

The emergency backup lights kicked in, casting an eerie red glow over the room. Standing there, holding Julian’s silver revolver, was Arthur Pendelton. Next to him stood two men in dark suits, their expressions empty.

"Arthur," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave. "You betrayed me."

"Betrayal is such a harsh word," Arthur smiled thinly, raising the barrel of the gun. "Let's call it a hostile takeover. Victoria was supposed to finish you quietly on the beach during your honeymoon. But since she failed so spectacularly, I have to clean up the mess myself."
