Chapter 1 - THE REUNION AT GATE 42The boarding bridge of Flight 492 retracted with a metallic hiss, and the sleek commercial airliner began its slow pushback from the gate.

Eleven-year-old Nora Mercer buried her face against her brother’s shoulder, her small frame shaking with quiet, desperate sobs. But Noah didn't cry. His jaw remained locked tight, his dark eyes fixed on the empty jet bridge where Vanessa Crane had disappeared fifteen minutes earlier.

"She's not coming back, Nora," Noah said quietly, his voice carrying a bitter, heavy maturity that no child should ever possess.

Twenty yards away, Adrian Vale stood frozen, his hand still resting on the polished handle of his leather briefcase. He stared at Noah’s profile—the sharp line of his jaw, the rigid posture, the terrifying stillness of a child forced to grow up overnight.

Thirty-eight years ago, standing in a freezing Chicago bus depot, Adrian had worn that exact expression when his own mother walked out of his life.

"Sir?" Marcus, Adrian’s chief of security, stepped closer, breaking his reverie. "The private jet is fueled and cleared for takeoff to Geneva. We should move."

Adrian didn't move. He kept his eyes locked on the twins.

"Cancel the Geneva flight, Marcus," Adrian ordered, his voice dropping into a register that made his security chief snap to attention instantly.
