Chapter 3 - THE VALE ESTATEThe black bulletproof Maybach swept through the iron gates of Adrian Vale’s Greenwich estate—a sprawling limestone sanctuary nestled against the Hudson River.

When the car door opened, Nora looked out the window in wide-eyed awe, clutching her small suitcase as if she were afraid someone would take it away.

"Is this a hotel?" Nora whispered.

"No, sweetheart," Adrian said gently, stepping out and holding the door open for them. "This is a safe house. And nobody is ever going to hurt you or make you run again."

Inside the grand foyer, a team of medical staff and private chefs waited quietly. Adrian had instructed them to treat the children like royalty. While Nora was taken upstairs by the head housekeeper for a warm bath and a hot meal, Noah sat quietly in Adrian’s private study, staring at the floor.

Adrian walked in, carrying two mugs of hot chocolate topped with marshmallows. He set one down on the mahogany desk in front of the boy.

"You haven't eaten all day, Noah," Adrian said, sitting in the leather armchair opposite him.

Noah looked up, his eyes meeting Adrian’s with an intensity that belonged to an adult. "Are you going to send us to an orphanage?"

"Never," Adrian replied firmly. "Do you know who I am, Noah?"

The boy shook his head.

"Your father, Thomas Mercer, did something extraordinary for me eighteen years ago, long before you were born," Adrian explained softly. "When every bank in New York turned their backs on me and my company was about to collapse, your father wrote a check for five million dollars out of his own pocket. He didn't ask for collateral. He didn't ask for interest. He just told me to help someone else down the road."

Adrian leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees.

"Your father saved my life, Noah. Now, it's my turn to save yours."
