Chapter 8 - The Edge of the AbyssThey skidded to a halt at Pier 44. The scene was an absolute war zone. Nathan’s security team was engaged in a fierce firefight behind shipping crates.

At the end of the pier, a massive crane held a metal shipping container suspended twenty feet over the churning, dark water of the bay.

Standing on the edge of the pier, holding the crane’s remote control, was Victoria’s father, Alejandro—the ruthless head of the cartel.

“Stop right there, Cole!” Alejandro bellowed over the gunfire. “Or I press this button and your little bastard takes a bath!”

Nathan and Grace froze, dropping their weapons.

“Let her go,” Nathan pleaded, holding his hands up. “You want the company? I’ll sign it all over to you. Every penny. The patents, the real estate, everything. Just bring the container down.”

Alejandro smiled a cruel, jagged smile. “You see, Nathan, it’s not about the money anymore. It’s about the insult to my family. My daughter’s wedding was ruined. She is likely on her way to federal prison. The Cole bloodline ends today.”

His thumb hovered over the red release button.

Grace fell to her knees, screaming, begging for mercy. Nathan closed his eyes, preparing to dive into the water the second the container dropped.

But then, an impossible sound echoed across the docks.

A tiny, sweet voice giggled. “Daddy?”

Nathan’s eyes snapped open. The voice hadn't come from the container swinging over the water. It came from behind Alejandro.
