CHAPTER 3 – The Man Who Smiled at the Fire

Daniel grabbed Emily’s arm and pulled her away from the crowd.
"Someone here started that fire," he said. "And whoever did it knew exactly where those documents were hidden."
Emily’s face turned pale.
"My wedding... my guests... my husband..."
Then she stopped.
Across the lawn, her new husband, Victor, stood beside his mother. Neither of them looked terrified.
They looked angry.
Daniel followed her stare.
"Why would your husband want those records destroyed?"
Emily’s voice broke.
"Because after tonight, he was supposed to inherit everything."
Before Daniel could answer, Victor walked toward them with a perfect smile.
"Emily, darling... step away from him."
But Daniel noticed something in Victor’s hand.
A lighter.
And on the lighter was the same symbol printed on the old bribery records.
Emily whispered, "Oh my God..."
May you like
Victor’s smile vanished.
"You weren’t supposed to survive."
