CHAPTER 8 – The Face Hidden by Fire

The investigation that followed shook the entire country.
Captain Michael Graves disappeared without a trace.
The media called him the mastermind behind the Carter cover-up.
But Daniel knew better.
Graves hadn't been running the operation.
He had only been protecting someone far more powerful.
Three weeks later, forensic experts finally restored the burned photograph found at Union Station.
Emily and Daniel were called to the evidence lab.
The technician placed the restored image on the table.
"You need to see this."
Daniel held his breath.
The burned face slowly appeared.
Emily gasped.
"No..."
It was Judge Harold Whitmore.
The respected federal judge who had sentenced Emily's father twenty-four years earlier.
The same man the nation called a hero.
Daniel immediately ordered police to arrest him.
But they arrived too late.
Whitmore's mansion was empty.
His staff had vanished.
Every computer had been wiped clean.
Only one thing remained.
A handwritten letter on his desk.
It read:
"You finally uncovered my name. Congratulations.
But you still don't understand the game.
James Carter didn't lose because he lacked evidence.
He lost because he trusted the system.
And now... you're making the exact same mistake."
Emily looked around the silent office.
Something felt wrong.
Too quiet.
Daniel suddenly noticed a blinking red light beneath the desk.
His eyes widened.
"Emily..."
"It's a bomb."
He tackled her to the floor just as the office exploded in a deafening blast.
Windows shattered across the mansion.
The entire building erupted into flames.
Hours later...
Rescue teams searched through the rubble.
They found Daniel alive.
They found Emily alive.
But Judge Whitmore's body was nowhere to be found.
Only his judge's badge remained, lying untouched beneath a collapsed beam.
As firefighters continued searching, one detective discovered a hidden underground tunnel leading away from the mansion.
The tunnel ended miles outside the city.
It was empty.
Except for fresh tire tracks.
Daniel stared into the darkness and whispered,
"He planned his escape long before we ever found him."
Emily clenched the badge in her hand.
"Our nightmare isn't over."
Somewhere, watching the news from an unknown location, Harold Whitmore smiled as he turned off the television.
Then he picked up his phone and made one call.
"They know my name now," he said calmly.
A deep voice answered from the other end.
"It doesn't matter."
There was a long pause.
Then the stranger spoke five words that sent chills through Whitmore himself.

"Activate Phase Two... immediately."
THE END... OR IS IT?
